I can't get started

Hi everyone. I'm new here and happened to find this website by accident. I really need help. I know I need to lose weight and everybody I know is well meaning and keeps telling me to try this diet or that or have gastric bypass surgery but I am so confused. I just can't seem to pick a diet and stay on it. I have about 150 lbs to lose and that much seems so impossible that just the thought of trying makes me want to cry. I wonder how things ever got so bad and I feel that I will never be able to climb out of the chasm I'm in now. What works for everybody else? I keep hearing try Atkins, do weight watchers but how can I do anything when I feel so hopeless about the situation? I know I use food as a crutch and depend on it for solace. How can I avoid doing this? Does anyone know anything to use to stop doing this because right now I'm desperate. I'm sorry that my first message sounds like I'm crazy person but it's just so hard to talk to anyone about this because they just tell me here's another diet; it helped me. Thanks for reading my rantings.

Hi Mickey, i am doing my own thing-keeping track of what i eat/calories and try to keep it between 1200-1500 a day; drink water at least 70 oz a day; and exercise 5-6 days a week. My advice is to pick something you can stick to, the thing that gets me through is remembering this is my lifestyle change NOT a diet. I've heard stories of people who lose the weight then go off program and gain it plus more back. There are a lot of diff programs out there-Body for life, counting calories,dr. phil, weight watchers, south beach, atkins, slim fast. While you try to decide which looks best for you i would recommend keeping track of what you eat& drink, make body measurements(there may be times the scale stays the same or goes up a lb or 2 because your're building muscle but you will probally still lose inches so that's why it's a good idea to do body measurements)

try exercising program. This board is good suppport and empathy. We do a weekly weigh in-posted on fridays but you can post it whenever, also we have a exercise min. logg where you can keep track of daily exercise minutes, and a daily menu post where you can post what your menu is/was for the day. I hope you enjoy the board and the help it offers. Good Luck =)

Hi! Hi! Hi! Welcome here. This bunch of girls is great. I think that Dr. Phil's Ultimate Weight Loss Solution might be helpful to you. That book kind of gets into the "whys" of how you and I think about things, and I think it might give you insight into yourself by answering the little quizes in the book. I think it helps to be able to look at the situation from a different angle.

As far as eating plans... I think looking for more info on the internet and picking one that you think you can stick to is a good idea (preferably one that you can live with forever). I'm still relatively new at this whole thing myself. I have gotten great ideas and links to websites from these girls. There a lot of message boards at ivillage for the different kinds of eating styles, check them out and see what real people doing these plans have to say. You can lurk and get lots of real life ups and downs of the programs.

I don't think it was nothing accidental about you finding this site. It was fate. I have been "lurking here awhile" and I never have found such a group of caring, and wonderful, joyful people. I myself have 175lbs to lose myself, im almost 25, and I just decided to take one bite at a time. I want to try to go to Disneyland next year and I want to make sure I can fit on the rides. So if you want to partner up we can. Email me at chardafos@hotmail.com

I don't know if this will help, but try to find something to replace the food when you are upset. When I get really upset I go for a walk. Another thing I do is quilt or scrapbook. It helps to keep my hands busy when I am most likely to eat. Plus after putting that much work into a quilt there is no way I am going to let food anywhere near it. I also don't keep trigger foods in the house. That way when I am having a rough day I have no choice I have to eat healthy. Good luck and let us know how things are going. I hope you find lots of support. sharla

hi hi! I too have just began my weight loss journey, I have tried several times and failed but I am finally in the mind set that I am going to do this. I have lost 17 pounds since Jan 5 and I am so into walking on my treadmill now. I really do believe that it is a totally mental thing. YOU have to be ready to do it for YOU. It took me a long time to get to that point. But I think I am to that point and it doesn't seem like doing this is that hard. I am doing weight watchers now and love it. I have 115 more pounds to go!
