Hi all,..

Ive been here before,. months,.. years ago, im not even sure, Ive started and failed so many times before, But I know i need a change, Im thinking of starting the DASH diet. Dietary approach to Stopping hypertension, which is basically your food pyramid with lowfat dairy. My main question is, since I've been sedentary for years and am very overweight, what exercise program/tape etc. can i do to ease myself into a better lifestyle?

thanks!

WELCOME!

I haven't been here that long and have made daily promises to myself to do it right, but have screwed up every day--so firstly, know that you are not alone. I don't do exercise videos mostly bc my 18 month old cries at me when I do (wanting to be picked up to dance too, I guess). I have tried Tao-Boa and it goes too fast for me, I have one Kathi Smith Tape which I like, but I haven't had a chance to learn the moves and thus feel like an idiot trying to keep up and I have a Brazillion Dancing video, which I also haven't been able to learn the moves of.

I don't know how sedentary you are or how overweight you are, but there is something that it doesn't matter about either of those things and that is Yoga. Yoga is about breathwork and you can start where you're at and it WILL raise your metabolism. You can get a how to video, but I would highly suggest getting an instructor for possibly private lessons if you can affod it.

Good luck to you. I look at overeating and emotionally eating as though I am a smoker...."don't quit quiting" basically everytime you mess up just start over and tell yourself it's ok...I've lost 63 pounds with that motto!

Hi Heather,

I think I'm riding in the same boat with ya! I've been as sedentary as they get for the past several years and I'm at least 140 lbs overweight. I'm using Weight Watchers as my eating plan, but I'm sure the plan you've chosen will work as long as it fits into your life and you can stick to it! (Mostly)

I also joined Curves which is at least a 35 minute low impact workout 3 or 4 times a week. I was embarrassed to go to Curves at first because I was certain that I'd be the fattest woman there, but I did it anyway! I may be the fattest woman there, but I am taking care of myself and that's what it's all about. You don't have to join a gym or any program to exercise though...walking is the very best exercise! MAKE the time to walk.

How would you take care of someone you loved very much? Would you make sure they had healthy meals, plenty of sleep, medicine or healthcare they needed, lots of opportunities to exercise and time for fun and relaxation??? That question was put to me and I thought about how I take care of my kids and my husband and my friends and everybody else...Waaaay better than myself! Now I'm taking care of myself too...just like I'm somebody I love very much.

You and I can do this!!

Faith :)

Heather,

The other ladies have given great advice.

I always saw weight loss as too big a goal to even tackle... A few months ago, I figured that was a silly outlook on something that will affect my health and life forever. Now, I work at taking it one day at a time. I have a general weight goal, but concentrate on eating healthy (which for me means mainly portion control and not giving into my weakness for fast food), and trying to get some exercise everyday, even if it's just an enthusiastic walk with my dog. I recently joined Jazzercise, and like another lady said, I'm probably the biggest lady there, but it is fun, the people are great, and it feels so good to go and get moving and sweat. :)

I have led a sedentary lifestyle as well, and it was hard for me to get moving at first. I started with walking, because it is pretty easy and it's convenient. Walking around the neighborhood, or whatever. I also bought a video called "Walk Away the Pounds" (often referred to affectionately here as WATP). She makes several different levels, and it is pretty easy and fun, and again CONVENIENT! :) I love to dance, so as I've gotten more used to exercise, I have started other tapes (though I haven't found one I love) and Jazzercise, like I said. A friend and I also go line dancing once every other week or so, which is a great workout if you give it you all. :)

Anyways- I wish you all the best, and hope I've been at least a little helpful!

Thanks everyone for your words of encouragement. It's nice that we have the technology

these days to be able to talk to each other the way we do through the internet.

I guess the hardest part of this is just getting started. "a journey of 1,000 miles begins with one step". I'm going to try my hardest, I think I'm going to start exercising first, then slowly change my eating. The first thing is to drink more water! I drink alot of soda now and I know its just empty calories. Also, my neighbor wants to

get rid of her exercise bike, so maybe I'll take it off her hands for her, it couldnt hurt to try I guess.

Thanks again!

Hi Heather, and welcome! You sound like you've got a good plan of getting back into things. I agree, getting started is the hardest. I've always been pretty sedentary, also, and I find that working exercise into my schedule has been hard, but I'm doing it! On busy days I break it up into 15 minute segments. At lunch, if the weather's ok, I will walk for 15 minutes, then at night when I get home, I might do some weights or a video. Several ladies here have recommended Walk away the Pounds with Leslie Sansone. I highly recommend that, also. It's a good way to start moving again, since her moves are not hard, but are challenging enough to rev up that metabolism. Also walking outside is always good, if it's not too cold or snowy! I don't know where you live, but here in New England, that's definitely a factor! Anyways, good luck and hope to see more of your posts.

Yeah, what Shawna said! LOL ....

honestly though if you are overhwhelmed about what videos you can use ... i would totally recommend Leslie Sansone walk away the pounds ... i love her 2 mile walk ... it's enough to give me a workout but not enough to make me feel dead at the end LOL!

welcome to the board =)

I started out at 270, i do various exercise tapes-free weights+weight machines-treadmill and walk. I am keeping track of what i eat/calories.

People are doing various plans never heard of DASH plan though. Good Luck with what you decide. I weigh and measure fri/sat.

Also the board has a weekly weigh in post, daily exercise min. post(posted weekly and you just go back and edit), daily menu.

Hi Heather!!

I too recommend Leslie Sansone's Walk Away The Pounds. Thanks to the wonderful ladies here for recommending it. I bought the set of 3. Started with the 1 mile and loved it. It really made me feel good about myself after completing it. And it's great for those of us that aren't used to exercise!! I didn't realize just how out of shape I was...

I've bumped up to the 2 mile now and it's a good tape too. But I like to switch back and forth between the 2 for now. Can't say when I'll ever get to 3 miles. whoa!

Anyway, good luck with your diet and finding a good exercise program.

Jessica
