Hi everyone,

I had posted before about getting started with my healthier lifestyle. Waiting to go food shopping but in the meantime I wanted to start some sort of exercise plan. Well, I had been thinking about Walk Away the Ponds by leslie sansone, and i just hadnt bought it yet and wasnt sure if i would, I just am too sedentary to walk very far, but today in my Woman's Day magazine i found a leslie sansone article, she breaks down her 1 mile workout and everything! I swear, I think its a sign that im headed in the right direction. So now until I buy the tape, i have this to work with. Its also posted on the net for anyone who wants to see. There is also alot of info on Heart disease and women. Here is the link for the WATP article : http://www.womansday.com/article.asp?section_id=4&article_id=8556&page_number=1

I also took a huge first step and drank about 30 oz of water during the day, i know its not as much as I need to drink, but before today I couldnt have told you the last time I had drank water and not soda, I had soda but only about 1/3rd of what I usually have!

Im slowly getting there!

Linda,

I actually LIKE to walk in the snow, play in it too (attack spouse with snowballs). Guess I just never grew up that way. In fact, the snow can provide some good resistance while walking, just like deep sand on a sunny beach can. And then, if you're in the Northeast, there are a lot of winter sports too.

I'm not disputing that tapes can be a good thing for some people at some times. I was just wondering what those tapes offer that plain ordinary exercise doesn't. I live in an area with lots of bike/walking trails (follows the old railroad lines, and I understand there's some attempt to create those kinds of trails from coast to coast). Anyway, that means the terrain can change from flat to hilly to winding to straight, etc and I'm not seeing what ANYONE wouldn't get just by choosing a one-mile walk (or more) around some varied paths in their own area. So to get back to my quandry, I was just wondering...and continued to wonder on my own long walk Saturday...what use the tapes were to most people, other than an added expense? If you like them, use them of course. But what do you like about them, that you couldn't get without them? It's no biggie. Just making conversation, and wondering...as a non-user of tapes.

Ahh, now I'm seeing more of it. So these are TELEVISION tapes, and not headphones on and listening walking tapes? Now I get more of the picture. Somehow I imagined these as pop-in-your-headset and miss the birds singing tapes. But these are things you pop into the tv vcr and use at home. Okay. I also pictured folks walking the alloted number of steps on some trail, then stopping, and knees up...you get the picture. That's why I said, in an earlier post, that it would look strange. I could just envision someone on the trail next to me doing all these "things" that would surely look strange to anyone not wearing the same headset! And I can certainly see HOW it would be useful to you, at home, during your son's naptime.

Me? I do all kinds of things for exercise, and I admit to having some VHS tapes on my shelf...but alas, most of those packages I've never opened and they take up almost an entire row on the bookshelf. Kinda like the stationary bike rusting in my garage which makes a lovely place to hang damp towels after washing the car! You get the picture. I do like to walk trails, all kinds of trails. But when I do that I don't wear a headset as I also like to enjoy my surroundings. And I play golf, regularly, now carrying my own clubs. And you know, different days mean different activities. Sometimes those activities equal going on a cleaning binge, as last week when I did the living room carpet (shampooing) and then cleaned a whole wall of windows in that room which gave me a great work out. Then, not being able to "stand" living room windows clean when the rest of the house needed clean windows....well, you guessed it....all the windows cleaned now. I also like archery, and it's great for the arms. REALLY great for the arms!!

I can see now why you were confused! I guess it would look ridiculous to do the knee lifts and stuff while going for a walk. I didn't realize that that's what you were picturing. If given the choice, I definitely prefer to go for a walk outside. Just today I went for a nice walk outside at lunchtime, and yesterday my dh and I went for a long walk. But when that is not always an option, I like to have the tapes to do at home so that I don't miss getting in some exercise. It's just nice to have several options to exercise. It keeps it interesting.
