New and Scared....

Hey all,

I guess I'll make this a short message. I need to lose a lot of weight, but it's always been hard because I either feel all alone in the process, or wind up taking the process too far by getting a little to extreme and restrictive with myself. I need to lose this weight for health reasons, given the high blood pressure, and I'd like to do it the normal, old fashioned way: I want to do basic walking three to four times a week, and eat about 1300 per day, in which 800 consist of dairy (for calcium).

I have wanted to diet for so long, but I can never get started! I want to be happy with myself again, and although weight shouldn't define who you consider youself to be, I do, and I might as well wirk with it than fight it and be unhappy, right?

So, I see a lot has changed with the boards since I was at iVillage.com a year or so ago! I might need some help with a walk-through.

Are there any suggestions with how to handle this board, or how to funciton within it? I really want to try out this community form of support and togetherness to see how well it can help me lose, and lose it the rght way. Is there anything I should know?

Well, I hope this experience works for me. If so, I'll be on the boards for a long while, considering I need to lose over 100!

Thanks for any responses I might get in advance! It's always nice when someone takes the time out to respond to me when they don't have to do it at all!

Hi and welcome to the board. You will find the people here comforting and very knowledgable in a lot of different aspects. We're all on different plans and styles and it's great to get tips from eachother. Congrats on wanting to take the first step to healthy living and a healthy new you. First thing I would do is find out what you're scared of. Identify it and then find ways to overcome it, whatever it may be. Come up with a daily game plan of how you are going to eat, what you're going to eat, what exercise and how to get all that damn water in! 800 calories per day in just dairy seems like an awful lot. Yes, we women need that calcium, would it be easier for you to take a calcium supplement instead? that way you could eat a more diverse group of foods? Just a thought. At any rate, welcome again and let us know if you need anything.

Welcome. I know what you mean about feeling all alone. It gets lonely when everyone around you only needs to lose a few pounds or they can eat what ever and not gain any weight. Everyone here is in the same situation and I think you will find lots of support. Again welcome. sharla

Welcome! Glad you decided to join us. I was thinking about the calcium thing. I take 2 Tums a day to supplement the calcium I get from my multivitamin and that equals more than the daily value or you can take 4 Tums which equals 120% of the daily recommended value and thats only 40 calories. I love dairy, but when you're dieting it takes up a lot of calories and fat. Hope this helps a little.

Instead of consuming dairy products why don't you try a supplement (I saw this suggestion in previous posts)? In order for your body to retain the calcium you need to take calcium with magnesium. Don't take the hard tablets because your body may find it hard to break those down try and find a supplement that has the powder inside the pill (aren't these called capsules?).

And please don't make the same mistake I did...

I couldn't figure out why I was gaining and gaining. I was eating properly and exercising. Until I found some helpful information. To determine your caloric intake you should use this formula:

10 x = your MINimum caloric intake

13 x = your MAXimum caloric intake

If you eat 6 small meals a day, divide those numbers by 6 to determine how many calories you should consume per meal. It may seem like a lot of calories and you may feel like you're pigging out but by consuming any amount of calories under your minimum number you will force your body to go into starvation mode. When that happens, anything you eat turns to fat.

Everyone has given you valuable information and wonderful words of encouragement. Good Luck to you and just remember that we're here for you!

I eat less than 1500, the few times i ate more than that i felt stuffed.

I think Dana's chart is the calories you want to eat at that weight. Like if you want to be 160 lbs eat 1600 calories? If i eat the min what my weight is now it would be 2500..lol
