"Say goodbye to those super-sized fries -- McDonald's is slimming down its menu.

The hamburger giant has started phasing out its trademark Supersize fries and drinks in its U.S. restaurants as part of an effort to simplify its menu and give customers choices that support a balanced lifestyle, a company spokesman said Tuesday.

By the end of 2004, super size will no longer be available at the nation's 13,000-plus McDonald's outlets except in certain promotions, McDonald's spokesman Walt Riker said.

The move comes as the world's largest restaurant company, and fast-food chains in general, are under growing public pressure to give consumers healthier food options in a nation that has suddenly become aware of its bulging waistline and the health dangers that come with it."

Yes, I saw that on last night's news too. By next year, no more supersize at any McD franchise. The market drives, and they've also been including more fruits, veggies in there menu....so said the news broadcast. I wouldn't know, as I haven't been to a fast food joint in a year at least...and I have no intention of eating at one.

I saw this on the news, and I was really surprised by it. I mean, yeah fries have a lot of fat, oil, and calories but really you should know that if you're ordering them. I mean if you are on a diet and are trying to lose weight you shouldn't even be looking at the fries. And the people that would order the supersize will just order 2 smaller ones now (plus have you noticed that lately their large fries are the same size the supersize used to be?). I mean I think its great that they are trying to offer healthier foods, but I know alot of people that ordered the supersize fries and they were making mad cash off of them at McDonalds. I think that its the customers responsibility to make good choices, and the restaurant shouldn't need to get rid of every thing else in fear of being sued or something because someone got fat from eating those things. I mean come on now if you eat a lot of fires and gain some weight it's not McDonalds fault-its no one's but your own - no one forced those fries down your throat! When McDonald's sale of supersize fries and all is actually hurting then they should consider it, but there's a million restaurants and menu choices from the various restaurants that dieters can choose and lose weight (yes even McDonalds has some ok choices), so if thats your goal, why are you choosing the supersized fries!?!

The only reason that I can think they are doing this is because they know that very unhealthy people will eat the supersize fries even when they shouldnt be.

Businesses don't feel "guilt" and unless McDonalds is going to start serving "health food" the business is not exactly a healthy choice for dieters, or anybody else. On the news, apparently McDonalds is doing it for money reasons. It's not profitable for them to continue with supersize, and just think how much more they can make if people order three fries instead of one supersize. As with all decisions, it's motivated by the business desire to increase profit. It's more profitable to drop that line.
