M&Ms

You know, it's not fair that women have to suffer from PMS. Our horomones rage, our bodies go bonkers, and before we know it, we've got to have chocolate. And I don't know about you guys, but for me, it's like, a matter of life and death!!!! So, last night I was at Wal Mart shopping for a birthday present, and all of a sudden, I had the craving for something sweet. Everywhere I looked there was Easter candy on display, and I'm sorry to report that I was weak and gave in. However, I didn't just buy the biggest, fattest candy bar I could find, I recognized that I was having a pms craving and I bought myself a little tube of those M&M minis. I feel good about my choice, because if I had to cave, at least it was just on something small... and it did the trick, cause I'm over it now... but it just sucks that I had to experience such an overpowering craving in the first place!

I've decided that Atkins diet is a bit too strict for me.. I don't know that I'm addicted to carbs, but I do know that I can't live without fruit. So, what is the general concensus? If I eat fruit, will I still lose weight? What has been y'all's experience with fruit?

I'm kind of thinking about South Beach online. Don't they pretty much tell you what to eat? How much easier can it get than that?

I excercised Mon and Tues morning, but I got up too late this morning. I think I'll work out on my lunch break, though. Fortunately, I work for a chiropractor, so we've got a treadmill, stationary bike, weights and excercise bands, etc. I haven't gotten on a scale. I think I might start weighing every 2 weeks instead of every Friday, because I become obsessive about the scale. Does anyone else know what I'm talking about?

How are you guys doing? Everyone sticking to it and shedding weight like it's nothing? (like it's ever nothing to lose weight... I know this, but sometimes I feel like it's harder for me than for everyone else in the world!)

Thanks, guys! Talk to ya soon!

Oh, yeah, and thank you for all the wonderful and encouraging welcomes! And yes, Shawna, I'm the same Heather that signed your guestbook. :) Thank you for the email!

You ladies rock!

Luv,

H.

Hi Heather

I have gone through the same thing at times. Just remember the weight battle is a life long fight. Once the weight is lost we have to stay in control to keep it off. With that said we should expect some days to be harder than others. Just pick you self up and keep going.

Be well.

Hi Heather...I'm right there with ya. You did better than I would have though (with your choice). I'm also on Atkins and contemplating switching plans. I too, miss the fruit along with low fat yogurt and all the healthy carbs. Let me know how it goes for you if you switch plans.

There is one explanation that is rather medical for the chocolate craving during PMS.

One of the wonderful attributes that chocolate has is that it releases endorphins in the brian, which helps lessen the pain.

Great excuse for a few M&M's but not for the whole pound bag. :)

Heather,

I'm not here as regularly as some, but if you'd like my comments regarding your post here you have them. First, about "overpowering craving ." I don't think there's any such thing, really. You ALWAYS have the power over food, and it's just a matter of exercising it. And that, apparently, you did....by choosing a small packet of M&M's instead of a 1 lb chocolate bar! Life is full of choices, and it's just a matter of making the ones best for you. This time of year, I especially enjoy peeps...those little marshmallow chicks. And did you know, a packet of 3 has abt 135 calories, 0 fat grams. And they come in three boxes of three each. I have some in the cupboard, unopened thus far. But when I budget into my daily caloric intake for 135 calories which I can squander, then I'll have one of the little boxes. Proper eating isn't about "deprivation" (is it?), but for me at least it's about making choices every day.

I'm not on Atkins, or South Beach, and neither would appeal to me much so, if that's your thing, I'll leave it to others to comment and help you along with that decision. I frankly prefer to "do my own thing" and I've been very successful at it. I don't want, or need, some one else's "diet plan" dictating my choices. So yes, I'm probably one of those people some "love to hate" because I fit nicely into that discription of yours when you say, "Everyone sticking to it and shedding weight like it's nothing? (like it's ever nothing to lose weight." I just count my calories, and eat normal food but not too much, and find ways to incorporate exercise into my day. And I'm losing nicely, no problems. But I don't worry too much about making it, necessarily, "organized exercise" (no gym or anything). I like to *do* things, sometimes a sport or a walk, but just as likely heavy spring cleaning...something that gives me pleasure or satisfaction. I'm not much for "jumping in place," if you get my drift. But for some people, they like that so more power to em. It's good that you work at a place with exercise equipment and have a chance to take advantage of that. Great in fact.

You also talk about weighing every two weeks, versus every week. Personally, I step on the scale each morning but don't obsess about it. I do write it down though. Do whatever you prefer.

I tried atkins for awhile but it too was way too restrictive ... i didnt even last a full week cus it was making me sick .... but i did lose 5 pounds though .......... afterwards i switched to calorie/fat counting and i'm still losing the same amount of weight by eating fruit & bread and pasta basically whenever the heck i want LOL.... so low-carb diets aren't the only diets that work :)

heck i'm still losin weight and i dont even count carbs at all, just cals & fat

Heather,

I don't think atkins is for me either! (However, I'll go ahead and say I am addicted to carbs. lol) I have just been watching my fat intake and monitoring my portion size. (I really haven't even been paying alot of attention to calories, even though I know that ultimately that's what counts.) I eat plenty of fruit, and I've been losing an average of 2 lbs each week, for a total of 16 pounds down since Jan 2, 2004. I am definitely working at it, though.

Working out is the key- it's awesome that you have those materials at your disposal! Best of luck to you! I think it's important for every person to find whatever works for them. :)
