New here

I am new here. I started a diet this week. I have a few questions about it though. I am a vegetarian and do not have extra $$ to buy the fresh fruits and veggies. They are extremely expensive here right now, due to winter. I am a lacto-veggie though. I just don't eat anything where an animal has to die, if that makes sense. Due to the fact I don't have a lot of $$ to do the fresh produce, my meals are basically just like half of what I am use to eating. I do drink water during the day, except with lunch and dinner. My main source of exercise is the Tony Little Gazelle. I did 65 minutes today. I do it in 20+ minutes reps. Is that okay? I am not left breathless after doing it, so I think it's fine. Or should I do it all at once? I am adding 10-20 minutes per day on the gazelle. I do have the orbitrek and a stationary exercise bike with the moving handles. If I do the orbitrek will it build muscle? I don't want to be bulky. I want to lose atleast 145 pounds. I am now 265. I know I am serious this time, as I can walk past the pastries and not want them, and for me that's a big step. That has NEVER happened to me before. My big bad no no though is soda. I only have it with lunch and dinner now. I used to have it all day long. I could go through more than 6 20ozs bottles a day before. I now only have 1 20 oz at dinner and 1/4-1/2 of a 20 ozs bottle at lunch. I know that's alot, but I am afraid if I stop with the soda all together I will stop this diet. I have stopped ALL snacks like pastries, potato chips and other junk food. Sorry for all the questions. Could I do the canned fruits and vegetables, since the fresh are so $$ here? Or are those worse? Thanks so much

I would do the canned fruit and vegis since fresh are expensive.Just make sure that the fruit does not come in heavy syrup. ALso, frozen vegis are healthier than canned so you might stick with them. It is fine to work in 20 minutes exercise blocks. You might try alternating the between the bike and the gazelle. I have never heard of the other machine, but you weight or stregnth training is very important. Not only will it help you lose weight, but it will help your bones when you are older. It is very difficult to bulk up unless you are trying. Hope this helps and welcome to our group. sharla

Brenda...

first welcome. Here's your chair.

I understand about the coke. I used to have that all the time. But I slowly took myself off of it and substituted flavored decaf teas. Good thing about that is that you get more of your water. Also if you use green tea that will help to detox your body. But don't worry start slowly and set mini goals...it's all good!!!

Welcome again

Welcome to the board!

You won't bulk up. Believe me. You will tone up. In order to bulk up you would have to lift atleast 100 pounds (50 or 75 might bulk you up a little). Most of the ladies you see on TV in bodybuilding competitions are lifting twice their weight and are lifting in small reps. Bulking up takes a lot of concentration and effort.

Good Luck! There are a lot of ladies here with good information & advice.

Welcome.

Just an add on to the great advise already posted. Canned fruit in its own juices, no sugar added frozen & apple sauce is good. Just watch the calories. Also look for fruit markets, they have good priced on in season stuff. In NY any way.

Good luck

Hello Brenda and welcome! First I wanted to tell you that you're not going to get "bulky" unless you are taking some kind of steroid or other such thing. The more muscle you have, the more fat you burn in your down time as muscle requires a lot of energy to hang around. I lift weights 3 times a week and am no where near bulking up. I used to have a gazelle type thing, but it didnt do anything for me. I read an article about it that said it is probably the least effective of the exercise machines so since you said you have a stationary bike I would go with that. My thoughts on it is if it's in the gym it's there for a reason and I've yet to see a gazelle in the gym. Lets see about the food...I know how you feel about soda. I used to have multiple a day at every meal. It takes a while to kick the habit. I'm not sure if I saw that someone had mentioned frozen veggies, but they are a good alternative. Cheap and still have all of the nutritional value. Glad you decided to join us and I hope you stick around!!!!!!!!

Hi Brenda and Welcome. I can't really think of anything else to add, these ladies prior to me covered everything I can think of (see how good they are?!). I agree on the frozen veggies and one thing about the fruit. Don't know where you live but around here and some other places there are a lot of asian fruit/vege markets. Things in there are so much cheaper! Maybe you can check that out (they have regular fruits/veges not asian kind). Or check on the web for your dept of agriculture to see if there is an all year round open air market. We have that out here too. Good luck to you. It sounds like you've really covered the exercising end! Good for you. Let me know if you need anything else.

From one Brenda to another,hello!

First off,I think the spurts in exercise are good...at least, thats my opinion. You're moving and thats good!

Second,I can understand about the fresh fruits and veggies, they can be expensive when they aren't in season. What about looking for the least expensive for now? Usually apples, bananas, and oranges are the norm in my house during the winter months...in fact,I buy a few different types of apples, one type for myself and one for the kids(they get the cheaper ones, lol). Then as the seasons change and other fruts start going down in price,I get what everyone likes.

And thirdly, what about a diet pop?My DH was diagnosed with diabetes in Sept.and even though he loved his Coca-cola,he can't have it now.He tried diet coke, but he hated it and has now found that diet Pepsi tastes pretty good.To him,it doesn't taste so much like diet.Just an idea...but maybe look into different diet pops =) Some are tasty.

Again, welcome and make yourself at home =)
