Is anyone here planning to increase their fitness to such that they can start running as part of their exercise routine? or anybody already doing that? I run very short distances(start and stops) doing agility training with my aussie. Id like to build up to being able to run around my block or the local track, without keeling over. I want to find a good plan to learn to do that gradually. if anybody knows of a good program to help build up endurance to be able to run please let me know. thanx jenz

Running is hazardous to my health. I don't think having continual black eyes and bloody noses is good for anyone.

Like already suggested, intervals of walking and jogging are good for building up jogging endurance. You can either do set milage or times such as walk 1/4 mile jog 1/4 or walk 2 minutes jog 2 minutes, or what I do is jog until I feel I can't jog anymore then do a moderate to fast walk to catch my breath and then as soon as I've caught my breath, jog again until I can't go anymore (plus I usually like to challenge myself since I have very little motivation since I hate running- so I'll either pick like jog for 2full songs on my cd player without stopping or I'll pick a landmark when I start to feel tired - a distant tree or telephone pole, etc and when I get there pick a new point until I really can't physically jog anymore (it helps to get over the mental barrier which is a big part of my endurance problem)). Also when you just start do more walking time then jogging and build up the jogging time for later jogging sessions, and when you return to a walk if you can try to walk at a moderate to fast pace to still keep your body working and challenged instead of almost completely stopping to a slow stroll. Also keep your jogging pace controlled - often when people first start jogging they try to jog too fast too soon. Start with a slow jog thats about the speed of a moderate-fast walk. Once you build up endurance then start working on speed (only change one variable of a workout at a time). If you run inside a lot of treadmills let you program intervals or you can just decrease and increase speeds manually. Even if you don't have a trail or track to jog on you can do a series of shorter runs without stopping (run up and down your street a couple of times then walk it - ok your neighbors might think you're a little odd but it works lol). Also if its more of a boredom or mental block thats preventing you from running long distances try breaking it up with exercises in between running (some trails have stations) or if on a treadmill maybe do a minute or two of jumping rope or crunches or even a segment of a video with kickboxing or something that you enjoy to break it up (but don't stop moving during your running break). Just keep challenging yourself and pay attention to when you feel you need to stop - is it your leg muscles feel weak and tired (maybe try some strengthening exercises too), your cardiovascular endurance (breathing really hard, heart racing, etc-where endurance really is the key factor), or is it a mental/motivational issue (where you body can go more but you stop anyways- then try some distraction-music or a friend- or picking mini goals -distant objects or times that are very attainable but keep resetting them once you reach it), so you know what your restrictions for building endurance are and what you most need to work on. Keep at it and you'll be running in no time! Good luck!

Currently I'm power walking on the treadmill at the gym. As I feel comfortable I keep increasing my speed, hopefully I will start running. I'd really like to do a good workout on the elliptical and then go to the treadmill for another good workout. I definately have to work up to that though.

Good Luck!
