Just so this doesn't get lost in the shuffle, here are a few sites for genealogy research.
First of all, I recommend going to www.ancestry.com and researching the already-in-place messageboards for other researchers who may be relatives or researching the same lines. I have made LOTS of progress with these boards. I use 2- the ancestry one, and www.genforum.com . Both are very helpful. You can search by surname, region, etc. You can also sometimes find people who will do lookups for you for free if they live in the area you're researching.
I don't have paid accounts, so I rely heavily on free resources.
You can get a lot of infomation from the LDS site- www.familysearch.org . The social security death index is a very helpful resource and can provide detailed clues you need.
Another excellent resource is www.rootsweb.com. You can use the World Connect Project to see if you find other people researching your lines. The ONLY problem with this site is that it's not checked for accuracy or regulated, so the information's reliability can be considered questionable sometimes. I usually use this as a jumping off point and then try to verify info elsewhere.
If your ancestors came through Ellis Island you may be able to find them at www.ellisisland.org. Registration is free and you may make some serious headway.
Another option is to type the surname, or name combination, that you are searching into a search box and see if anyone else has been studying your ancestors. If you get stuck, email me or post and I will see if I can dig up anything for you.
Good Luck!
Mel
