Just curious what your opinions are on this........I've always wanted a carat.

Okay, I'm on the wrong side of this...as it seems everyone else would go the cheaper route. I just got engaged and have a gorgeous diamond. I picked it out. It's a .95 (almost a carat) in a beautiful solitaire setting (it's a duplicate of the Tiffany setting...not the generic ones, but the actual one). The cut is perfect, it's colorless, and gorgeous. We had looked at rings at the mall stores and nothing they have could even come close to competing with this diamond. HOWEVER, the price at the malls are very close to this diamond! That's what's so crazy. Check out this website: superbcert.com. Barry at Superbcert is incredible at helping you pick out diamonds within your budget. Plus they have some great settings. Although my ring cost about $5500 total, it was worth it, in my opinion. It's something I'm going to have the rest of my life. And I've had complete strangers come up to me and gawk about the sparkle of my diamond and how incredible it is. Even if you can only get a half carat from Barry, it's worth it!! You can always upgrade.
HOWEVER, if you want to use the money for other things, that's probably the more logical way to go. I am glad we went this route, though, because I'm immensely proud of my ring. It's not the biggest one out there, but definitely one of the prettiest I've ever seen. It has more sparkle than anything else I looked at in any mall store or other jewelry store. And the sparkle has everything to do with the CUT of the diamond, not color or clarity. If and when you start researching diamonds, you'll notice stores tend to talk a lot about color and clarity. It doesn't matter nearly as much as cut. All the diamonds Barry has at the website I mentioned are super ideal cut. They are absolutely gorgeous.
Oh, and by the way, I just looked at the website, and you can get a 3/4 carat diamond for under $3000! :) And you know it's a super cut, much better and cheaper than any store you go to. And half carats are around $1200-1800 or so. I just think if you want a diamond, you can get one.
Sorry to go on and on, I just thought I'd share my great experience with you.

Hon, I am with you. I am not going to go the cheaper route at all. But I do want an enagagement band, which will have to be made. I am fortunate enough to be dating a man who is able to afford it and owns a house if we do become serious.
I am not married but I agree everyone is entitle to get what they want. Friends of my Mom have been married for over 30 years. When then they got engaged they got matching tatoos. I know that is not for everyone & a bummer if your marriage ends but they each have a love bird (I think that is the bird) with a wedding band in its claws. The tats are on their backs but I always thought that was cool.

Shannon - Thanks so much for that link.
I did some research on the Moissanite and I'd have to say personally I would pass it up (see picture comparison at http://www.betterthandiamond.com/education/challenge/01.php where they have a moissanite lined up with an Asha diamond simulant, a $35,000 real diamond, and a super premium hand cut CZ). Moissanite has a tendency to chip, plus the natural color is green, so even the "clear" ones tend to show green in UV light (sun). The Asha simulated diamonds at the http://www.betterthandiamond.com web site are gorgeous, so if you wanted to go the simulated route, you should check these out. They are compatible with colorless diamonds, are offered in many different cuts, and have a lifetime warranty. You can have them set in yellow gold, white gold or platinum.
