Give Me a Break!!!

One of my very small friends (she wears a size extra small) got very upset with me yesterday. She has been saying that she is fat and needs to loose weight for atleast a year now (come on, she's a size XS and I have over 100lbs to loose, don't talk to me about fat!). Well, she told me yesterday that she has lost 13lbs, and I said "Where could you have possibly had an extra 13 lbs?" then I said "No, I'm happy for you." then I teased her a little again saying things like "I wish I were as fat as you are". I know it was insensative of me to down play her acheivement, but isn't it insensative of her to parade her tiny little butt in front of me and holler that she is fat at the same time? Anyway she is very upset with me now.

i am so not going to fuss at you about that. i had a friend who was a size 0 and if you could have gone smaller she would. well she complained about love handles. do you know how often i wanted to hit her?

I'll be the first to admit that sometimes its hard to have a "skinny" best friend.

Well, I guess "fat" is in the eye of the beholder! I agree that it is really insensitive of her to do that in front of you, but from her perspective maybe she really doesn't "see" your struggles, and her own are magnified. She isn't going to "get" it, so if you value her friendship, I'd suggest next time giving her all the support an praise she needs without "teasing", and then come here and vent to us where we SO understand what you mean!!

from grade 3 through the first couple years of university I had a friend who was a model. Even though I weighed less than 100 pounds, I was not fit at all and was at that weight thanks to an amazing metabolism that went into the gutter as soon as I hit my 20's...and I was far, far from a size 6. I felt fat being next to her.

I hesitate at posting this, and I'm sorry I did, because I have never been over 200 pounds and I guess I can't relate.

I think my point is that I am still not happy with my body, probably never will be and here's a point of view from the other side.

OK, now I am curious. But let me have a disclaimer here...i mean no offense by this at all. truly friendly curiousity.

if you haven't been over 200 and it would seem that you are at a smaller size, perhaps you can share why you have decided to come hang out with us? i haven't heard yet why and i am curious to know your story. :)

because I want to support people just starting out, not the people who noodle around with 5 pounds more to lose.
