Question About Eloping! Opinions please!

Hi Everyone,

I've been away from the board a couple days and WOW! I think I'll have to get myself a Silver Bullet after reading some of these posts. :)

Well, I do have need your opinions, though. This has nothing to do with weight loss! Okay, my fiance and I are talking about possibly eloping within the next couple weeks. We've never wanted a big wedding; we just want to kind of get it over with. We've been together nearly three years and we're in love. Plus we're really, really busy. And he's going to be starting a new job soon, and my job is really stressful. So I need your opinion on the following places to elope. Oh, and by the way, I live in Michigan. I think in this case, geography matters (because I don't like flying):

1) Vermont: It's about a 12 hour drive. Some people say there's not much to do. But what are we going to be doing anyway? It's elopement/honeymoon combined! Plus it's beautiful and it's very easy to get married there. There's no waiting period after you apply for the marriage license. And there are a lot of Bed and Breakfasts and hotels there that specialize in elopements.

2) Chicago: It's about a 4 hour drive from me. I have found a lady there who will marry us. I'm just concerned about the costs there, plus it's so busy and crowded. I don't know. My fiance likes Chicago a lot. But I'm not sure about it for elopement/honeymoon.

3) Niagara Falls: I think it's about a 5 hour drive from here (can't remember). I kind of think it's overrated. I'm looking forward to relaxing and taking in scenic beauty. Don't get me wrong, the falls are beautiful, but to me, there's not much to do there. There's wax museums and a lot of touristy stuff...I guess I'm not really into that. My fiance likes the idea of Niagara Falls also.

4) Las Vegas: The old standby. Obviously, we'd have to fly there. And I'm not so keen on flying. I don't really think this is something we'd really do. I just threw it in here.

So, what do you guys think? I really want to go to Vermont. It's so relaxing and there are so many places to get married! Plus all the inns there have massages and saunas, and everything. I want to relax. What do you guys think of the other places??

Thanks for your opinions!

Shannon

I live in New England (MA) and I think Vermont is beautiful. I've never been to any of the other places that you mentioned (except Las Vegas for about 4 hours) but being a New England girl, I'm kind of biased on Vermont. This time of year should be pretty with spring coming, but it's too bad it's not fall. There's nothing like fall in New England for the foliage. But it will definitely still be pretty this time of year with the snow still on the mountain tops. Good luck on whatever you decide. And I like the idea of eloping. Weddings are so much work and it's over so soon. As much as I loved my wedding, I wouldn't have minded eloping at all.

Good luck and congratulations!

Palamino Girl,

I live in Massachusetts right on the NH border. We go up to NH a lot for day trips. Where do you go? We like to go up to the White Mts a lot. We go to Franconia Notch State Park and the Kancamagus Hwy. I just love it up there. We also go to Lake Winnepasaukee a lot. Have you ever been up here in the fall? If not, you really should. It's beautiful!

Go with Vermont! You want your wedding to be special, even if you're eloping, and that means not falling into the typical trap of couples who are eloping...going anywhere that will marry you. You and the fiance will be able to have what's probably the longest period of uninterrupted conversation on the drive there and back; plus Vermont, though 12 hours away is quaint and quiet and conducive to honeymooning bliss (wink wink). I'd pack my bags and head for the hills (of Vermont). Good luck and Congratulations!

I visit my sister who lives in Derry. I ucually come up in June and October. We ride the horses through the old logging roads and sometimes trailer them up to Brighton Beach. Bar hopping on horseback is fun! Hee Hee!

I used to live in Derry and I have two brothers who still live there! Small world. I live about a half hour from there now. Bar hopping on horse back...that does sound like fun!

Linda,

That's quite alright!! :) I am glad that most of you guys agree with me about Vermont. My plan was to sort of make my love happy and maybe swing by Niagara Falls on the way back. We were planning on going next week, but due to his school schedule, it might have to change (bummer). Who knows when it will be now? Maybe we will go in the fall when the colors are beautiful. Either way, we'll be married sooner than if we were to have a traditional wedding. Plus we don't want a traditional wedding. So everything's good. I just wish we didn't have such conflicting schedules.
