My name is Shay, and after reading the messages sent to Mskatie, I was encouraged to join in and ask for help.
I am a 40 year old stay at home mom, homeschooling my 3 kids. I started gaining the weight about 3 years ago. Four years ago this month I had a 4th baby, unfortunately, she didn't live. I know depression can manifest itself in many ways. For me, eating has been my source of comfort.
When your with kids all day, there are always snacks to give out, left over lunches to clean up. I've recently made a point, with much flack from the kids, to buy more healthy snacks. That has cut down on my intake of cookies and chips.
I've never been a real healthy eater, though I've never been this overweight before. Looking at 100lbs to lose seems overwhelming. Like any addiction, the first step is to accept the fact that you have a problem. Now what? I've read a little about both low carb and the atkins diets and they both seem a little extreme. Can anyone offer any info?
I look forward to hearing from anyone,
Shay

Hi there Shay!
You're right, a hardship like that plus being home with other children can really pack on the pounds with the years. But you've already taken the first step in deciding to do something about it. And now with every meal start by cutting back a bit, leaving something on your plate, and making healthier food choices. The pounds will come off (or on) with the choices you make at every meal every day. It didn't come on overnight, and it won't come off lightening fast either. But if you take small, consistent steps, every day.....you WILL reach your goal. Guaranteed. And I think you are right NOT to follow a fringe plan, or a runagade medical "expert." It would be good to read as much as you can, try some new healthier recipes, and go with the standard acceptable dietary practices AMA, American Heart Association, American Dietetics Association.....those you can trust. And since you want to lose a substantial amount, it would be a good idea to start with a medical checkup and let your family doctor in on your plan. Good luck to you.
My philosophy is that we're all going to make mistakes, but that doesn't mean an end to whatever weight goals we have accomplished. Look how far you've come already, especially that you're willing to admit there is something you need to change.
I'll be your pal. We can work toward our weight, nutrition, and exercise goals together. Plus, you can depend on me to spare an ear or two for hard times. (I am sorry about your loss.) I look forward to our times together Shay. Welcome!!! - Beth
