As you can see, others believe strongly that the government does have a right to require you to wear seat belts. I imagine your State is like most, and when you apply for a driver's license (for the first time) you read a booklet and pass a written and driving test. In your booklet, if it's like most States, it will tell you that driving is a privilege and NOT a right (someone alluded to that here, I think). You don't have the right to break the laws of your state while behind the wheel of a motor vehicle, and one of those laws requires seatbelt use. If you disagree with it, you can of course turn in your license and give up your priviledge to operate a motor vehicle. But you don't have the right to break laws, whether it regards wearing seat belts or running red light, and somehow be exempt from fines or losing your license. Somehow it's curious that wasn't made clear to you, as it is to other drivers everywhere, when you applied for the priviledge of carrying a driver's license for your state of Michigan?
Personally, I think every State should enact the laws which some already have which enable the police to stop you (without other violation) if they suspect you or anyone in the vehicle is unbelted, and in some States it's three strikes (failure to wear the seat belt three times and get caught) and you lose the license. No one should be allowed to operate a motor vehicle in ANY State without ensuring that every single person inside is belted. Failure to do that, and the license should be pulled ....permanently.
As others have mentioned, seat belts save lives AND not wearing the seat belt every single time costs everyone else in this country more money every year, for things like insurance etc. It's socially irresponsible, IMO (let alone, illegal) not to wear seat belts.
I figured there was more than just the seat belt ticket contributing to the $700 total--the particular offense isn't the point, lol! I absolutely LOVE to shop, **especially** if there are sales, coupons, etc. When you mentioned $700 total in tickets, it got me to thinking about what I could do at those spring clothing and shoe sales with $700 in my pocket--oh, the damage I could do!
Society doesn't bear the cost of a driver choosing not to wear a seatbelt until that driver is injured in an accident. That's when insurance premiums go up and government might contribute to the cost of medical treatment. An unbelted driver doesn't pose a risk to others on the road for her failure to wear a seat belt. Drunk drivers, speeders, and those who run red lights or commit major traffic violations DO pose a risk to us all by virtue of their actions.
No one has convinced me yet WHY we need to have intrusive and punitive legislation regarding seat belt use when there has been a fairly adequate market response to the failure of drivers to wear seat belts (in the form of higher premiums for the individual driver).

Hey, and maybe while we're at it let's allow the government to search our houses whenever they want...or maybe throw us in jail or a camp if we don't agree with the party line of the government. Or how about if they have the right to cut our hands off to set an example for others. Or how about if they make it a law that women have to cover their faces in public, and make it legal (and encouraged) that husbands beat their wives.
Sheesh.
