Do you like wheat bread? Just kidding. I couldn't resist. Now for the real question. I have been reading the labels on different breads. I noticed wonder had only 16 carbs, but no fiber. The whole wheat I have has 19 carbs and 2 gms of fiber. Another one that is really good has 20 carbs and 1.5 gms of fiber. I know the whole wheat is the best, but is there a general rule for how much fiber and carbs a bread should have. The reason I am concerned is this whole wheat bread is just too good for it to be healthy.

thanks lots

I don't count carbs, but I look for breads with at least 4 grams of fiber. Right now I have a loaf of Dempster's Whole Grain with Omega-3 added. It is made with NO white flour and has 6 grams of fiber per slice. My problem with it is that the slices are too big I feel bloated after eating a sandwich made from it.

The other kind of bread I eat (and prefer, size-wise and taste-wise) is Wellness Multigrain. Less fibre, but more reasonable portions.

I don't know if there is a general rule regarding how much fiber/carbs a bread should have. There does seem to be a bit of a difference in the count between breads that are the same type. I use the Nature's Own 100% whole wheat bread--it doesn't have any artificial preservatives, colors or flavors, and the total carb count per slice is 11 grams, and has 2 grams of fiber. It's pretty good in flavor and texture.

Sharla...

Good morning! I don't look at the carbs, so I can't help you there. However, I do look at the fiber. One thing my dietian has shared with me is that if you have the fiber (we need 30-35 grams a day!) your body starts to work to regulate the intake. I love wheat bread. I have also discovered that many will give up on the fiber and whatnot for taste. There is German Wheat that is very dark, in fact the darker the bread the more it is filled with fiber and good for you. It has, if I remember correctly, 3 grams of fiber per slice, which is the most I have found for any wheat bread on the market. Now it's really dark and heavy but it is rather tasty.

I don't count carbs either. I used to be on Atkins a year ago and would eat gluten bread. This was a white bread and you had to buy it at the natural foods store. Plus you have to keep the stuff in the refrigerator because it had no preservatives. It had like 6 grams per slice or less. Don't know about the fiber content though. It was tasty, made good toast. I would try the health food store for the good low carb stuff. I've tried Roman Meal low carb wheat bread and thought it was nasty. Now I eat Pepperidge Farm whole wheat bread with no preservatives trans fat. It's good. Hope that helps.

I'm not on a carb-restricted plan, so I worry more about how much fiber is in each slice. I've finally found one I really like. It's from Milton's Quality Baked Goods, and it has 19g of carbs and 5g of fiber per slice. I get very full eating a sandwich made from this bread. I have bought this bread at Safeway and Wal-Mart.
