How did you pick the diet you are on? Why is it really appropriate for you? What is good about it and what is bad about it? (I know we've touched on this a bit, in terms of what KIND of diet we are on, and if we've ever changed programs, but I'm interested in hearing the pros and cons of several different diets. Besides...someone *ahem* recently suggested that we have more "diet related" talk :-)

Well, I don't know WHERE to post - I'm doing low carb AND low fat !

Let's see.. I was doing Atkin's until I got my cholesterol checked and it was off the charts, but I was losing weight...So I talked to nurse practicioner and decided to try moderate carb, low fat. That was ok. Saw scary dietician, and now I'm on a low fat version of Atkin's.

I will tell you right now, I feel wonderful and am losing weight faster than traditional Atkin's. Tuesday April 6 I saw dietician and weighed (on MY scale)174. Yesterday morning, exactly a week, I weighed 167.5. Not bad for a week and I did not suffer at all !

So far this is what has felt the most natural and is the easiest for me to do, despite being on 1300-1500 calories a day.

I am in the same boat...have no clue where to vote.

I am not on any diet plan. Due to my heart condition and the fact that I want to be able to find a healthy eating style that I can stay on now, during a baby (if I ever have one), and in my old age.

My doctor suggested a dietian that basically has me on all 4 groups. She is teaching me how to have the right combo and what foods are better for me i.e dark bread vs. white bread and how much protein at each serving. I did ask her why no Atkins or the others and with me I need to have a heart healthier diet than those offer. I also am very active and having a low amount of carbs in my diet will cause me to burn out. No fun when I am tired.

It has been slow but I think the metabolism is starting to move (took it long enough let me tell you) and I feel so much better.

You could have put together a poll and then people could have voted and then posted their thoughts after. Oh well. Anyways...

I'm still trying to find a lifestyle that my body responds to. I'm thinking of ordering the weight watchers books from ebay and then incorporating the Atkins way of thinking. I'm going to borrow the Atkins book from the library first so I can understand this program a little better.

I tried South Beach -- hated it because I felt restricted and I wasn't creative enough so either I didn't eat or I ate the same things over and over.

Slim-Fast -- loved it but the products started to taste really sweet and I couldn't handle them anymore.

I did Weight Watchers years ago...I think it was the 1980's program because my mom still had all the books for it. I lost a lot of weight and didn't feel hungry. I did feel deprived a little but I think everyone goes through that when they change their lifestyle.

Good Luck!

I'm doing a combination of approaches. Diet-wise, I've been doing South Beach. It's been working out so far, and now that DH and I are moving into Phase 2, I've learned to love fruit more than I ever did before. Not only that, but I used to be a soda & sweets fiend. What has been great about going through Phase 1 and cutting them all out is, I can drink a diet soda or have a sugar-free fudgesicle and think they are the most luxurious treats ever (just much healthier than the old ones I went for).

The other thing I'm doing is working through Dr. Phil's book to address the psychological reasons I got here, and that's helping. I'm starting Key 2 right now, which I'll need since I've always been an emotional eater and give into impulse eating all the time. I think it's really important to focus on the inside as well as what you're eating.

Well, it looks like I'll be joining the low carbers on the board. I had looked into Atkins about six months ago, but I wanted to check with the docs before I definitely started it, so in the meantime I went with a diabetic diet, cutting out sugar, etc. I had been losing about one to two pounds a month.

Finally I got around to talking with my internist and also sitting down with a cardiologist to discuss this issue. They both recommended Atkins, which kind of surprised me. From all the press, etc, I just figured ALL doctors were against it. The cardiologist said he had several patients on this "way of eating", and had seen improvement in their cardiac conditions and overall health as long as they followed it correctly. Both docs emphasized the fact that you had to follow it to the letter, no cheating. I'm re-reading the book and feel like I'm ready.

So, today is my first official day as a low carber--wish me luck!

I'm doing Atkins...and I think the best thing about it is that I have more energy. The worst thing about it is the first few days when you're going through withdrawal. But it passes and soon you feel more energetic and healthy. Also, if you're not creative in the kitchen you can get bored with food choices in the beginning. Luckily, I am big on experimenting in the kitchen so it's not a problem for me. lol. It can be a little expensive but I'm thinking that since it has become more mainstream perhaps products will become less expensive soon like the low-fat stuff has.

It is important to follow it strictly but in reality it is not as restrictive as people think. It's all about choices...just like any "diet".

I chose this WOE because I knew after reading the book that this was something I could do forever and feel good about. I tried WW before and I just felt too limited...like I wasn't able to eat enough. I am finding that I need to eat often to keep my metabolism up and with Atkins I have learned to eat when I'm hungry and the foods I eat are more filling so I eat less of them at a time. I notice that instead of not eating until lunch time, I wake up and I feel hungry...I've never had that feeling before. It tells me my metabolism is working! :o)
