Not long ago there was a segment on Dateline about bariatric surgery, and how really it's being foisted upon some morbidly obese patients, and how oftentimes it's undertaken too easily as almost "the in thing to do." I'm sorry for your loss of a friend through this surgery.
The sad thing is, I think, if people really buy into it as "the only way to lose weight" or as some kind of "quick fix" or a celebrity thing to do. I know, Sharon Osborne did it, as did Al Roker....and were very public about it, and Carney Wilson too. But how many patients really go into it with eyes open, understanding that it's life altering in negative ways too (eating normally should never be resumed for instance, though some do and sometimes have complications because of it). I wander, but I also have strong feeling about this type of surgery, all of which can be summed up in the negative.
Healthier results, the old fashioned way. Sensible eating, and when possible (perhaps after some weight loss) reasonable exercise. The goal should be good health, not an altered life through surgery. But that's just my opinion.

Again, I'm so sorry for your loss of your friend.
