Hi Dana!! It's always nice to see another Canadian on these boards!! Where exactly in Alberta do you live? I'm dying to go to Calgary, because first of all, I've never been anywhere in the world, and Calgary sounds like such a wonderful place...My DBF's brother lives there and we're hopefully planning a trip there sometime this year! I'm in Ontario. ~Sabrina

hi losingmomtutu

i wanted to let you know that i hear you about finding time to go to a gym to weight train. a much cheaper adn easier and (more importantly) faster way to do it, is to weight train at home with a pair of dumbells. it takes about ten minutes a day. here is a simple plan for daily weight training:

http://www.stumptuous.com/weights.html

and if you click on the exercise, it will take you to a page with visual instructions.

sabrina,

I'm always so excited to talk about nursing. I just love it. How do like nursing home work? Sometimes my patients are long term care (im in neuroscience, neurotrauma) and I enjoy developing a relationship with them. I suspect that is the best part of your job. Are you excited about getting licensure?

*tee hee* thanks, Shawna! I don't remember the last time I was in the 100's... it's pretty damn exciting, though! For MANY years I just didn't weigh myself at all, because I was in denial that my problem was as big as it was. I gained a lot of weight after my mom died about 4 1/2 years ago, and my confidence level was nearly ZILCH! But now I'm so much more confident. That has got to be the BEST part about losing weight!! I can't believe how many other areas of my life are improving because I have more confidence! One big thing is that I can now stand up for myself! I've had to fight with a lot of girls at work who seem to think that they should do significantly less work than I, even though I get paid as much as them. I think my wages should be based on how much work *I* do haha!!

Anyway, thanks for the encouragement!!:)

Hi, Katharine! Yes, I'm very excited!! It's been a long road for me, but I'm finally at the end, and I can't wait to get a job as a nurse!! Are you an RN or an RPN? I'm almost an RPN, but I may one day go back to finish my RN. Where are you from?

You're right about developing a relationship with patients...that is my favourite part of nursing as well! I love being able to do for them what they can no longer do for themselves...it's very satisfying. I am very fond of long term care and that's probably the kind of floor I want to work on, as well. I think that's because I've loved working in the nursing home so much. One of the nurses at work suggested that I try acute care for a while, but I don't like it as much...patients are in and outta there so fast, and it's too busy an environment for me!! Long term care can be busy, too, but a different kind of busy, and I'm already used to it because I work in the nursing home.

Hope to chat a bit more with you! :) ~Sabrina

Linda, 246/225/150?, My own plan, MA

1. Name a few of your favorite fruits and veggies.

I like oranges, bananas, grapes, broccoli, green beans, carrots, celery, snow peas, most vegetables, actually except for green peppers! Blech!

2. What are you favorite exercises (have something to recommend?) and do you have a tip for managing your exercise time?

Now that the weater is warmer, I'm doing a lot more walking. I also like to do the Firm tapes. Tips? Well, I guess just try to fit it in whenever you can. If you don't have time for a 30 minute walk, then take two 15 min walks or 3 10 min walks. Every little bit helps.

3. Name five items near your computer.

I'm at work so I'll say water bottle, calculator, phone, box of tissues, calendar

4. What do you do in your spare time for fun?

My dh and I like to take day trips a lot.

5. Do you have a special ability or talent?

Does doing my own taxes count? lol!

6. And if you could have a special power, what would that be?

I was going to say troll zapper, but someone already took that one lol.

1. Name a few of your favorite fruits and veggies: broccoli, carrots, peas, apples, peaches, watermelon... I love most fruits and veggies, actually. :)

2. What are you favorite exercises (have something to recommend?) and do you have a tip for managing your exercise time? I joined Jazzercise a few months ago, and absolutely LOVE it. There's aerobics and strength training. I go 4 times a week and get it all in one place. My only real preference I think, is that I prefer plain old crunches to any of the fancy ab workouts, and the pilates ones drive me nuts. lol

3. Name five items near your computer: 1. Can of coke (not even diet... it was a rough day and this is my one treat.) 2. my calendar that has everything in it 3. pictures of my family and friends in an accordian-like frame 4. a red glass apple (did I mention I was still at work?) 5. a basket of scissors, pens, etc.

4. What do you do in your spare time for fun? read, dance, play with my dog.

5. Do you have a special ability or talent? I played the clarinet for like 12 years, but it was more for social reasons than anything else (that makes me sounds like SUCH a dork!!)... I don't think I was particularly talented. I don't know... I am pretty crafty if that counts! :)

6. And if you could have a special power, what would that be? Flying! Nah- I don't know.

As for the basics, I am Tina. I weighed in at my high of 266 on Jan 2, 2004. I started dieting and working out then, and have lost 23 pounds. I am now at 243. I have several shorter term goals, but my long range goal is to be around 160 by New Years 2005. As time passes, I am getting a little behind on my plan, so realistically, if I am at 180 by then, and reach 160 a few months later, that will be fine, too. As for my plan, I am just doing my own thing. I am careful about what food I allow in the house (living alone that's pretty easy), and I try to eat healthily. That usually involves a slimfast shake for breakfast (I am NOT a breakfast person); a green salad w/ fat free dressing and a piece of fruit for lunch; a snack of raw veggies/ low fat graham crackers/ fat free cottage cheese/ or the like; and a sensible dinner... sometimes a lean-cuisine meal, sometimes broiled chicken, steamed veggies, and rice, or something like that. Since it is not a specific plan, if I eat something not so great, I take a deep breath, and move on, trying to do better the next time I am faced with a food decision. I feel like having a strict plan might be too much for me... since I'm doing okay so far, I am sticking with this. Also, I commend all the girls that work out at home. I am just not motivated enough to do it. I own so many workout tapes... and they are all dusty! Jazzercise has made a huge difference. I know that I perhaps could have lost more, but I have built so much muscle- it feels GREAT! I can't remember ever being able to feel my muscles before. I love it.

Okay, I've been quite long-winded enough! lol

Love you all,

Tina

You are exactly the type of person nursing homes desperately need. I am so happy that you are there doing what you love and taking pride in it. The RPN is canada's LPN, right? I am an RN. It took some years outa me (and gave back some grey hairs!), but it was a goal of mine to make it and I finally did. (of course I've given it up for the time being to raise Seth)

I live in Houston Texas and although I despise the heat and humidity, I enjoy being able to have my pick of jobs. We have the largest medical center in the world, here. Still, I want to move to a nicer area as soon as we can afford it. like seattle or boulder
