WELL - I've decided to try Atkins.

After spending 6 weeks concentrating on health and sensible eating without following any particular plan, I have lost NOTHING. I've been averaging around 1500 calories a day - WELL within my supposed range for weight loss, and doing about 1 hour of exercise a night, alternating between cardio and strength. Honestly, you'd think I would have lost SOMETHING, but there is no change in weight, inches or clothing size. My doctor is just as mystified, but I strongly suspect that he thinks I cheating and underestimating my calories (if anything, I've been deliberately rounding "up" to be on the safe side) and his only advice is to "stick with it". Well, I sincerely don't see any point in sticking with something that is NOT working. He is not an Atkins fan, that's for sure, but he grudgingly admitted that there wasn't any "harm in trying", and he did all my blood work already 6 weeks ago. SO... I bet that's a whole lot more than you need to know, eh?? LOL I'm starting Atkins tomorrow, and giving myself the 2 week induction period to see how I feel and if it seems to be making any difference in any way. I'll probably check out the Atkins board, but this is "home" for my limited posting time, and I know there are a few "Atkids" here. That's all. Wish me luck ;-)

Its so funny that you posted this. This is EXACTLY what has happened with me! NOthing gone.....low calorie, low fat, exercise, etc... and NADA. And I thought exactly the same as you about going on Atkins (again for me). Lets give it a try together, whatcha say!

That sounds like a great idea! Maybe this will do the "trick" for both of us!

Hi ! I have alot of posts and replies on Atkins...I did Atkins to jump start my weight loss again, had by cholesterol go up, and am now doing low carb/low fat. Yes, you CAN do low fat on Atkins. I am proof! I'm glad you got your blood values checked before you started - just keep an eye on them. Even my dietician, who does not recommend one diet over another, says that Atkins is fine - just too much saturated fats like marbled meats, cream, butter, cheese, bacon, etc... So I am doing the low fat low carb thing, and alot of people on Atkins who have stopped seeing results or no results at all are asking me a buttload of ?'s. I posted what I was allowed to eat and the calorie range I'm in (13-1500), amount of carbs I should stay under (77) and PORTION SIZE. THAT has GOT to be the biggest change of all ! A serving of pasta is 1/3 of a cup ! Who the hell eats a THIRD of a cup of pasta ???!!!

Please, any questions, ask. I am a diet veteran by now and I've learned some good things, usefull things, and know when to make changes (or get people OFF Atkins if they tell me about certain things going on indicative of a negative side effect of the diet. One woman I am buddies with had serious BP problems and felt like crap. I urged her to stop Atkins and see her Dr. Other posters urged her to stick with it and try harder! Her BP was in the range of causing a stroke. She is off Atkins and fine now.)

Bestest of the luck !

I'm happy that you have come to this decision! I was skeptical at first about Atkins, too, especially being a nurse. My specific thought was "How can it be healthy to practically cut out an entire food group?" But that was before I had all the facts, and realized that Atkins just makes sense! It makes sense, scientifically, that the body will burn it's stored fat instead of the carbohydrates that you take in. True, Atkins is controversial, but I have not seen any solid proof yet that it is unhealthy, as long as you do it as written. I urge you to read the book, if you haven't already, because there are a few ways to do Atkins the WRONG way, and that may be bad for your health.

If you have any questions I'd be happy to answer them as best I can. I've been doing this for about 9 months now, and I've lost 56 pounds. I never thought I could be on a "diet" that was so exciting...and one that you get to eat up to 4 ounces of cheese a day! I love cheese! GOOD LUCK with induction!! ~Sabrina 264/208/160-165

I tried this before xmas and lost 6 lbs. then went off and tried "my own way". it didn't work. its hard not to have fruit for 2 weeks, but its only 2 weeks. I need this and think w/someone else doing it too (well alot of you), it will keep me on track.

have a great day.

Good luck to you, too, Dawn! I just had breakfast - 3 scrambled eggs with a little bit of cheese, and now I'm off to the grocery store to get the rest of what I need :-) Quick question, if you know...I peeked at a couple of Atkins boards, and noticed a few people referring to the "terrible" side effects of induction. Other than hunger or cravings, what do they mean??? The book doesn't really say anything about that, but I see you've tried this before, so maybe you know.

Ya'll...

I was looking at my hummus and noticed that there are only 6 carbs per serving. It tastes great with raw veggies. Just a thought for when you are looking for snackage.
