Feeling really down this morning. I seem to go down a few pounds and then the next day I go back up again. I was so excited yesterday because I had gone down 2 pounds for the week and I couldnt wait to post on the weekly weigh in. Today it went back up. I have been doing this for like a month now even though both eating and exercise has been good. Has this happened to anyone else and how long did it take to break? What did you do to make it start going down again. Thanks, I could really use some encouragement. sharla

Hi Sharla...That happened to me, too, even on Atkins. I would go down a few, go up a half to a full pound, go down, hover...I try not to stress about it and It takes a few weeks but eventually goes down.

I try to be really conscious about what I eat until I am comfortable enough to wing it. I still write stuff down, too, so if I don't see a loss for a few days I can go back and check to maybe find the culprit.

Some Tips -

1. Make sure you drink enough water. The more foods you consume that contain added salt and sugar, the more water you will need.

2. If you drink regular soda, switch to diet or flavored seltzer. And stay away from fruit juice. It is as bad as soda, but without the carbonation.

3. Get enough sleep. If I had a dime for every study I have read regarding lack of sleep as a deterrent to weight loss, I'd have at least 70 cents.

4. Don't go forever between meals. Keep crunchy snax around like celery or fruit, other raw veggies. I am scarfing down celery as I type right now.

5. Pay attention to your menstrual cycle. You can gain and retain up to EIGHT pounds of fluid before your period, which is why most of us pee like a horse after it comes.

6. Speaking of periods, I REALLY watch my carb intake right before. I am extremly sensitive to certain foods (even more now that Ii stopped eating alot of crap)and bloat up like a racoon carcass on Georgia asphalt in July.

7. Keep a food diary and see if a pattern forms. I write down what I eat every day so I can rub it in my dietician's face when I see her in May. I was only supposed to record one week, but one week is simply not enough to establish a pattern.

8. Weigh youself in the morning, naked, after you've peed and/or pooped. Really.

9. Get more fiber in your diet. I'm not sure if you are on any specific diet, or low carbing or what, but adding flax seeds to things like yogurt, and taking Metamucil seem to help.

10. Above all, realize it is a work in progress, and you may not see scale results every day or even every week. Are your clothes fitting differently ? Do you work out enough to put on muscle (it weighs more than fat). And don't beat yourself up. It takes time and sometimes you zig zag up and down a bit. Don't get discouraged and keep yourself busy with thoughts of how good you are going to feel when you reach your goal. If anyone had told me it would have taken me 3 years to lose 100 pounds, I would have cried because I WANT INSTANT GRATIFICATION!!! Which is why I was stuffing my face with Mallomars to begin with(and crab rangoon, Coca-Cola, fudge, cookies...)

Keep your chin up and keep going ! It will happen !
