That's awesome, Amy!

I know that you, at least at one point, were on Atkin's. Have you stopped Atkin's? Or modified it? Or are you on it full force? I am wondering if you think there is a correlation between your numbers and the diet plan. My instinct says Atkin's bad, not only because it's a "diet," which takes away a food group, but because of the encouragement of sat. fats.

I don't know if it's because I've been brainwashed or not. I like Weil's Optimum Diet which is a lifestyle change more than a "diet."

Kathy

p.s. in case you need a giggle, i found this guy on ebay. HA!

Oh, Kathy, that was hilarious! All I could think of was that man twirling around singing 'I feel pretty'....

I'll give you the quick synopsis of what's gone down with my diet...It gets a little confusing so sit down first...

January '04 : Having gone from 265 in 2000 to 188 in January, I decided to come up with a goal of getting down to 160, my HS grad weight. Started Atkins full-bore. Did my little Atkins Journal, bought some more books (have done Atkins before but refreshed my self)

February 04 : Doing good, but getting bored and VERY cranky. Down to 178ish. Go and have my cholesterol checked, it's 292. 292 !!!!!!! WTF!!!!!! Decide to eat more carbs and cut out as much fat as possible. This included sat fats, trans fats. I stocked up on oatmeal, fat free half n' half, and did lower carb/low fat. I reaaly tried to cut out the fat. In 3 weeks I lost eight pounds. Nurse practicioner had recommended I see a dietician, which I did.

April '04 : See dietician, who basically agreed with Atkins, with exception of all the sat fats. That is what turns into cholesterol. She looked at the diet I had been doing myself for the past few weeks and thought it was great, but tweaked it a little. She took away FF pretzels (SOB) and added fruit, yogurt, nuts, and PB. (OH THANK GOODNESS!)

So, I was still doing low fat/low carb, BUT watching my portion sizes and staying between 1300 and 1500 calories a day. So here's a rundown on how I knocked 80 points off my cholesterol in under a month.

Breakfast: 8 oz. yogurt (fat free plain sweetened with Splenda and berries)and a handful of almonds. Of, a slice of whole grain toast with peanut butter, or an apple with PB. I can have eggs and fruit, but I'm off eggs for a while. Just grossed myself out on Atkins with them.

Lunch: Lean protein like chicken, salmon, tuna with veggies or salad. Sometime I do hummus on a low carb wrap with lettuce and chicken.

Dinner: More lean protein and veggies -I CAN have small amounts of starch, like 1/2 small potato of a 1/3 cup of rice or pasta. I don't. The portion size isn't worth it to me, and the dietician said the lower my carbs, the better. I keep it between 30 and 70 carbs a day. I'm allowed 77.

Snacks : One piece of fruit with an ounce of cheese or PB, or a handful of almonds. I am a celery freak and can eat a WHOLE head of celery in a day. Actually, an hour. It's rather disgusting !

Supplements: At dieticians request, I put flax seed in my yogurt. It is a good source of essential fatty acids and fiber. I use it whole or grind it in a clean coffee grinder. Between the fiber and linseed oil in it, you will never be constipated AGAIN.

I also take calcium because I hate milk, a multivitamin, Potassium because I drink a ridiculous amount of water, Biotin, Red Yeast Rice (for the cholesterol)and fish oil capsules. I only take these because I NEED to, and I'm seeing if the Red Yeast Rice really works before they pull it off the market because it works alomost as well as prescription stuff.

Beverages: Water, coffee, diet soda, diet ice tea. No juices, and I was advised to not drink my calories.

So, that's it in a nutshell. I have to say it definetly worked for me !

To all of you...Thank You and hope you're doin' the happy dance with me ! Or at least wriggle around a bit (be careful if you are at work)with a smile on your face.

But, can I make it to 145 ? And should I give myself a time frame or just take it as it comes ?

That's an awesome diet and I'm glad that youre staying away from the sat fats/trans fats. It's actually similar to my diet, but I don't "watch" my carbs, I just make sure I get my protein, yogurt/cheese, fruits and veggies before I get my carbs.

DS Seth is fussing so I gotta go. I wish I had more time to be involved here. I g3et to check in only when he isn't awake.

You're my hero.

good for you! my hubby has very high cholestrol, I was wondering what the red yeast rice is? Is it a food, or a pill supplement.? Id like to try hubby on it.
