Anyone doing Atkins? If so, how's it going? I was thinking about trying it for a while -just wondering if anyone had tried it and had success?

I just finished my first week with Atkins and lost 10.5 lbs. I did Atkins tho' last year for about 4 months and lost about 38 lbs. I love this plan! Things got sort of crazy around here and I stopped working at it. I tried doing Weight Watchers early this year for about a month and a half and I couldn't swing it. Carbs are not my friend. LOL

I would strongly suggest you read "Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution" to see if this is something that you would want to commit to. There are other low carb plans out there, I just personally find that I need the structure of Atkins. South Beach is another wonderful plan that is a bit looser with variation. It's great, you should check out several before you decide, just to make your journey smoother.

There are several people here who do low carb and have been successful. That's what motivated me to restart this way of life.

You can also try www.lowcarbfriends.com . It's loaded with tons of info and lots of success stories for various plans. Many are from Atkins.

Goodluck to you in whatever you decide to do.

I just started last week, and it is going well. I'll admit that I wasn't absolutely "sure" that I wanted to do it - it seemed so extreme! And the first two days were kind of hellish - I stuck it out, but it really did require lots of "will power" and I must have said a hundred times that I couldn't do it...but then right after that, just like they promised, the cravings went away. I discovered that I really don't mind what I'm eating, and I feel fine. I've lost 9 pounds, but I suppose some of that is water, but I'd have to give it a "thumbs up" so far!

Not I, though some posters use Atkins. Fad diets work (for a nanosecond). It all comes back and then some. And then, there are also medical concerns about the safety of high fat/low carb methods. Have you asked your doctor?

To the original poster - Atkins is NOT a fad diet!! The research is sound and has been confirmed by many, many independent medical studies - it is becoming widely recognized that low-carb dieting is not only safe, but a very effective way to lose weight (the last study I read said that weight loss tends to be far more "pure fat" then low-fat/low-calorie dieting, and therefore much more likely to stay off). If you are interested in trying Atkins - do your research, if you want to ask your doctor go ahead (many, including mine, support Atkins - a factor that I've mentioned to Forte but she keeps ignoring to tell me it is dangerous) and don't let the ignorance of the uninformed scare you off. I don't see an MD beside HER name either! LOL

My doctor also recommends Atkins in certain cases. She is very happy with the progress I have made on it, as am I. As long as you follow it correctly it's an excellent plan for many people. It's NOT a fad diet, it's a different approach to eating altogther.

I actually started my plan with Atkins today. I have been reading the book all day long! It's really exciting. I am very heavy (280lbs) and I was told a while back by my doctor that I should consider a "high protein, low carb" plan like Atkins. I just didn't follow his advice because at the time I didn't care. But now, I've been working out everyday and cutting out sweets and junk food for the past (almost 2 weeks) and haven't noticed much of a change on the scales. I was really kinda hungry all the time and didn't feel good. This is why I changed today and started the Atkins plan. At least I can eat more "food" (maybe not carbs) and hopefully will be more satisified and get the scales to start moving down! I'm excited about it. I saw in the book I can have deviled eggs!

I appreciate everyone's advice and hope people on the board won't be too judgmental of peoples decisions. I think we are all here to provide support, no matter what. I think each of us has a "battle" to fight and as long as we win, it shouldn't matter how we do it. Everyone is different.

Thanks again!!!

My internal medicine doctor and cardiologist both recommended Atkins; I'm going into my third week--the first two weeks I lost a total of fourteen pounds. However, they did emphasize that it is a lifestyle change, and not a diet. If you go off of it and back to your prior way of eating, you will gain the weight back. Make sure you read about all four phases--too many people read about the first phase and think that is the whole thing.

Atkins Nutritional Eating has been around for more than 20 years and no longer qualified for "fad diet status".

Just remember Atkins is not for everyone...just like not every medical procedure will help out everyone.

My doctor and cardiologist won't put me on it because I am too active. I will need those carbs to keep going and not burn out my body. I also don't eat as many carbs as others.

I don't doubt that it works for others. I have friends who lost a significant amount of weigt on it, but for me it is not recommended.
