I was just wondering if anyone has any fitness goals that seemed really impossible when you were first starting (or maybe it hadn't crossed your mind at first) but now seem more attainable and achievable. I mean like running a marathon or something.

I live in Western Washington State and I was driving to my sister's house the other day and saw Mt Rainier in all its glory and do you know what I thought?? I thought, "I should climb that" !!!!

What?? I have NEVER had any desire to climb a mountain...but for some reason, I do now. maybe because I feel like I could do anything right now?? I don't know. But it really seems like something I could do one day in the not so distant future. In fact, I am looking in to what I need to do to train for a climb like that...and there's a 50 mile hike I'd like to do around the base of another local mountain. One day, one day...lol

I just feel really empowered lately and climbing a 14,000+ foot peak seems not so impossible...lol. I thnk I'm going mad...rofl.

It's just strange to me that I thought that and didn't say, "you're crazy. You can't do that"...I guess my self-confidence is back! :o) woo hoo!

So anyone else have these kinds of thoughts or aspirations??

Yeah...I read that after the fact and it didn't come out right...lol. The riots were definitely NOT magical...but pre-riot there was something in the air that was wonderful! And walking (or bussing) into the shopping district was even better! :o)

There's a Candy Cane Lane in University Place near Tacoma too but it's pretty lame...lol. Nice light displays but nothing like what you described...lol.

As for the riots...I remember a lady coming onto the PA sounding like she was about to cry (I was in the same building as the mayor and across from the jail) saying we were going into lockdown...of course it was right at quitting time and I was pregnant and I was like, "fabulous". We watched them go down 4th Ave, turn up James and surround the jail to protest some arrests. I was able to sneak out the 4th Ave Exit and make it a couple blocks downhill to my bus stop and then I had to walk a couple more blocks south, out of the downtown area because they had shut bus service in the business district down. I called in sick to work the next couple days....and some of the guys I worked with braved the riots (I'd call it more stupid personally) and tear gas to get some great pictures. It was scary watching from anywhere I think...fortunately, when they came to surround the jail it was a peaceful crowd...there were just some other people that were there to specifically cause trouble...and the police weren't completely prepared for it (though I think they did a good job all things considered). A lot of the people that were there didn't even know what the WTO is...they were just there to "experience history".

Anyway...I guess, I have a story to tell my grandchildren, eh??

Hi again Sarah,

Did I say that our discussion about Seattle had me wanting some nice Seattle smoked salmon...and so, of course, I got one fillet from Seattle at our local Sams Club and I've been enjoying it 2-4 ounces at a time each morning for breakfast! Now if I only had some Market Spice tea (Pike Place Market is the only place I've ever seen that), and a humbow and steamed potsticker (or two)from the self-same Pike Place!! I have another month, give or take, before I'll be out that way and I'm really, really looking forward to seeing Seattle again.

Your initial question here was about "lofty goals" and the whole time I lived out that way I always wanted to go white water rafting. Never did that, but maybe when we have three months out that way....yes, that's on my personal "to do" list.

About the riots, again. Didn't they go all the way out to the U-District at the time? I was just amazed, watching downtown on the nightly news back then.

We didn't have family or friends out Tacoma way, so Seatac was probably the closest I came to "seeing" Tacoma and, admittedly that doesn't count. I do remember, back in the 90s though, some military guy decided to wage his own war on drugs on his street in Tacoma (do you remember that one??). He came home from *work* with his weapons and ammo from the base and a few of his closest military buddies....and waged war on a crack house, for one solid week a huge shoot-em-up! Funny that should cross my mind, but I remember watching it nightly for a week on King-5 news ;). And then do you remember Larry Sturholm, that comic guy on the news who was a good friend of Aaron Brown? I was watching CNN news with Aaron last night and I recalled the night Larry was killed by the spouse/lover (can't remember which) of his girlfriend. Larry was quitting King-5 to move with her across country, abandoning his wife, and he had this signoff where he water rode into the sunset on skis (pre-recorded) and as luck would have it while Larry was riding into the sunset on television it was exactly the time he (and she) were being murdered in his lover's house! Weird the things that come to mind when we think back about places we use to live!

Anyway, you've certainly given me some nostalgic things to remember. I loveed living out there, and pretty soon now not only will the grass be the "greenest green" but your Washington skies will be the "bluest blue you've ever seen....in Seattle." Spring and summer, you guys have it all. I hope you take advantage, and enjoy every second of it!

I haven't had Market Spice tea in a long, long time. It's one of those things a person can take for granted....until it's gone! Good stuff.

I remember Larry Sturholm getting murdered....and that it was a whole love triangle thing...I wasn't really affected by it too much since I was pretty young (wasn't that in the late 80's???) and I barely knew who the guy was...I mean, I thought it was sad but his name didn't mean much to me except that I recognized it from the news. I was actually trying to remember his name the other day...lol. So thanks for reminding me!

I don't remember the crackhouse thing though...I know that Tacoma has REALLY been cleaned up (in a positive manner) since the 90's though. I was in high-school in Kent in the early 90's though and *way* too absorbed in my own little dramatic world to be concerned with *Tacoma* (sarcasm)...I think it was probably par for the course at that time for Tacoma though. I know Hilltop was really bad for awhile there...drive-by shootings and gangs and all that stuff. It's still "the 'hood" but it's a lot better than it was. I do remember in the mid-late 90's there was a series of drive-by's on the freeway near the Tacoma Dome...I remember that because I had to work on that very off-ramp shortly after (I was a land surveyor) and we were all a little freaked out.

White water rafting *does* look like a good time! I'd like to try that someday too! :o) And there are sooooo many beautiful rivers here to raft on.

Ooooohhhh...there's a place on that little street that runs to the east of the market that sells humbows...maybe it's the same one you're thinking of...just like a little open store-front/stand that sells them...and I have never tasted one better. I haven't had one for so long (and since I'm doing the low carb thing I'll have to plan for it...lol) but man, that sounds good! mmmmmmm...I can smell them!

I think the riots did go into the u-dist. I remember they were heading uphill from the downtown area and it was just so weird to watch.

Spring has definitely sprung here...it's been rainy for a few days but we had a break today and my dd, Caity and I planted some flowers in our deck planters...it makes me smile to see them there! :o) We definitely need the rain but I hope we get some more of that beautiful sunshine soon!!!

And finally, I am ashamed to admit I have never tried Market Spice tea...I am going to have to pick some up. I was never really a tea drinker until just recently. Is it just herbal or are there all kinds of flavors? hmmmmm...I'm going to have to look into this...lol. Thanks for the tip! :o)

The reason the Larry Sturholm thing impressed me (and I don't know whether it was late 80s or early 90s?) was the oddness of it all....how his friend Aaron Brown had the task of interrupting programming later that evening to *break* the news (and tell the truth about it, in a *gentler* way because KIRO was about to mudsling and after all Larry left behind a widow and children who would learn about his affair at the same time they learned about his death!). And how Aaron said, when he paid tribute to his friend that Larry's time of death was at the same time the *riding into the sunset* was occurring on the evening news. I remember talking to a friend about it: how odd that this man was dying as the television was showing him most alive and happy and riding on skis across Lake Union, saying goodbye to us all! Anyway, sometimes life is stranger than fiction. And Aaron Brown is still the best man in television when it comes to doing eulogies. I really like him, and glad he has national exposure now on CNN.

The crackhouse *story* had always stuck in my mind, way in the back there someplace. I hope the military guys who *appropriated* govt equipment and firepower to do the commando raid on the crackhouse didn't end up drummed out of the military for it. A little too extreme in their efforts to *take back the streets* (okay, a lot too extreme firing on the crackhouse for a week straight). But I'm glad to hear Tacoma has gotten so much better. As I said, I don't think in all my time in Washington that I ever really knew Tacoma as I didn't know anybody out there and my family/friends were pretty much situated north.

>>Ooooohhhh...there's a place on that little street that runs to the east of the market that sells humbows...maybe it's the same one you're thinking of...just like a little open store-front/stand that sells them...and I have never tasted one better. <<

Oooooh, THAT'S THE ONE!! We use to trudge down there, even in the rain for one of those things (okay, TWO)and I LOVED THEM SOOOOO MUCH!!!! Okay, my hubby used to tease that I shouldn't look at the floor in that little hole-in-the-wall because if I did (dirty) then I'd never be able to stomach the humbows.....but I saw the floor, and they tasted so good that...well...some things are best overlooked. I love the pork ones best! The potstickers I liked from that place actually inside the market, just opposite the flying fish.

Spring has sprung, eh?! I remember, every year, the rhodenderons (sp?) which grew wild all over the place...and the smell, so wonderful. And how about those Japanese Cherry Trees (you know the ones, that Washington State kinda *stole* from that shipment which was a gift on its way to Washington DC?!!!). They are planted in the quad on UW campus. By the way, did you attend UW? I hope you don't mind my asking. I did!! GO HUSKIES ;)

YOU'VE NEVER TRIED MARKET SPICE TEA?!?!?! OH MY GOSH! Pick some up, it's heaven in a teacup. And once you try it, you'll remember it no matter where life takes you too. I swear, I can *smell* it brewing (in my mind, only) even as I write this. I'm gonna have to buy a ton when I get out there, so it lasts! And I'm not low carb (just counting calories, and fat grams) and I know that humbow place doesn't *list* either....but I'll be careful, and guess-timate as accurately as I can....when I get to Seattle a first stop WILL BE the market....for the humbows, steamed potstickers, and oh that market spice tea!

I've loved our trip down memory lane here this week. Thank you sooooo much. Plant some herbs on that deck...all of them grow wonderfully in your area...and then, come summer, sit out there and enjoy your new addiction (that market spice tea I'm trying to get you hooked on) while savoring the smell of fresh morning mint. Have a happy weekend, and get outdoors there in Washington and enjoy it for ME!

Nice, very nice, making your acquaintance here!

BOOOOOOOOOOO! Boo Ducks! rofl...

I didn't go to UW...I actually went to the fabulous Renton Technical College (formerly RVTI) to be trained as a land surveyor...and then more recently to Ashmead College to get liscensed in massage therapy. I'm a trade school girl!!

But I *know* that the Ducks don't rate...lol...

and Forte...no problem! I've enjoyed this little (or not so little...lol) conversation we've had here too! :o)
