I took Ramey to the ER around 9:30pm. He was doubled over and in pain, had a fever, a sore throat and was still clenching his teeth and insisting that he wasn't sick because he has to take brownies to school on his birthday. He has a viral infection, he's anemic, and he is literally full of crap (in spite of having gone just 2 hours before he had the xray). He's been given milk of magnesia to force him to have a bowel movement, and they said there's nothing they can do for the viral infection unless it becomes bacterial. Just treat the symptoms...He has to have a follow up appt. with his dr. to see if she wants to prescribe iron pills or just have me find a multivitamin with more iron than his current one. I told the dr. that we eat a lot of meat, but that I am anemic as well, and he said to write down our diet for a week and give it to the dr. to see if there's a way we can increase iron that way, too. I was very proud of Ramey when they were drawing his blood. I was squeamy about it and I hate needles, but Ramey sat there and asked questions, the tech had him feel the vein and let him look at the blood vials up close and personal. I was trying to ignore the fact that the man was sucking my child's blood out of him, while my child was saying "Cool! Look, Mom!" When Ramey asked why he was taking so much the tech replied "Well, half of it's for tests, the 2nd half is for my lunch". Ramey thought it was hilarious. The nurse asked me to accompany Ramey to the bathroom for his urine sample as well, to make sure he washed his hands and cleaned up etc. Ramey assured me he could do it himself...then proceeded to sit the cup on the floor, get on his knees and begin to undo his pants while resting his head against the wall (to help him aim? I don't get it!). When I stopped laughing I told him to let me hold the cup over the toilet, and to just pee in it and I wouldn't look. He did, then asked the nurse from the doorway. "Hey, where am I supposed to put my pee? Is there a place for the pee?" The nurse took it from him and Ramey proudly informed her "I didn't even pee on the cup. You're not touching my pee!" Somedays I long for a mute button on my children....
We didn't leave the hospital til midnight because it was very busy in there. While we were waiting the dr. mentioned that I didn't look too good and I explained about my spleen and said I wouldn't have the results for a few days. He checked my throat, swabbed it, and sent it upstairs. When he brought me the results of Ramey's tests he brought me mine too. He says I have mono. Ugh! I have a weight restriction to avoid stressing my spleen and have to avoid physical activity that could cause it to rupture. Guess I'll be dipping my Communion wafer this week....
I was VERY worried because I held Emma on Monday, but the dr. assured me that she would be fine because A. she didn't drink after me (glad I didn't sample that bottle...LOL!) and B. Babies are generally protected from this type of virus for a few weeks after birth by their mommy antibodies. Whew!
Rob and I sang happy birthday to Ramey when we got home and bundled him into bed. He'll be okay to go to school tomorrow as long as he goes potty and he has no fever. He wants a bonfire later on rather than a full-fledged birthday party, so we're just going to have a tiny cake and ice cream at the park tomorrow (before he has soccer practice). He'll get his bday present then- he's gonna be SO excited! He's been bringing up his bike (that was left in MI because we told him he had to choose between his bike and scooter- we didn't have room for both. The bike was getting small for him, and the scooter was new, so he chose the scooter) alot lately, and when I asked him what he wanted for his bday he finally said "A bike. And if a bike costs too much now maybe I can get one for Christmas???" I told him we'll see, and the next day got the Shopko ads in the mail, advertising BIKES ON SALE! YAY! So we got him a pretty red and silver one that Rob says is "sharp". I can't wait to see Ramey's face! He's 9 years old today and he's gonna think he's the king of the planet on that bike.
Hugs,
Mel
