Yesterday was my son's 16th birthday. He got his drivers license. He is driving a car around in the great big, cruel world right this very minute! I want to eat the rest of the birthday cake...it will make me feel better... I haven't yet, but I WANT to!

Don't do it!!! Stay away from the cake. Step away.....you'll only regret it later!

I can't even imagine what you're going through. My oldes is 11, so Ihave a few years before she drives. It scares me even now!

You can do it! I wish I could yell that to myself sometimes!

Good luck--w/him and the cake!

I hear you. I want to eat your cake, too! :) We're just having emotional days. It happens. I can't imagine having my little man out riding around on his own, though! I feel your motherly anxiety! Here's to feeling better without eating the cake (or in my case the tortillas and popcorn and yogurt).

Happy bday to your son! My son's was yesterday, too. He's only 9 though. I've got a half an ice cream cake and a gallon of ice cream in the fridge calling my name too. LOL!

EDIT* My son got wheels for his bday too....thank goodness it was just a bicycle!

And HOW would it make you feel better? Or perhaps a more interesting question is WHY would it make you feel better? If you're hungry food makes you unhungry, but food was never intended to be more than, well, FOOD.

Because eating food, particularly sugary fatty food such as cake causes the brain to release a big boost of dopamine, norepinephrine and serotonin. That's why. Would you like me to detail the brain structures and nueronal pathways involved? I'd be happy to oblige.

And actually food is "intended" to be "more than food". One could cogently argue that that powerful boost of chemicals and the gustatory pleasure from eating caused our ancient ancestors to eat when they were not hungry, provided food was available. Those ancestors who ate when they were not hungry and developed a little extra fat were more likely to survive famine and reproduce, thus passing on genes that coded for brain chemistry that made people more likely to eat when not technically hungry.

Not intending to offend anyone who believes in creationism. Just putting forth a hypothesis. One could also argue that God makes food pleasurable because he loves us and wants us to be happy. See the "Weigh down diet" by Gwen Shamblin for more on that.

We have a resident poster who believes that some food creates pleasure in its planning and consumption. Maybe you should talk to her and she could explain it to you. :-)

Thanks Erin, You said exactly what I wanted to say only you said it with grace and intelligence. I would have just been a b1tch.

On a happy note, I didn't eat the cake! Instead, I checked on Ryan and made sure he was in one piece and then I went to Kohls and bought myself 3 new pairs of sandals and a new purse. So I used retail therapy! Good for me huh?!?!?
