Yesterday was my son's 16th birthday. He got his drivers license. He is driving a car around in the great big, cruel world right this very minute! I want to eat the rest of the birthday cake...it will make me feel better... I haven't yet, but I WANT to!

I respectfully request that you do not reply to me when I ask for support or guidance on this board.

That's twice.

>And actually food is "intended" to be "more than food". One could cogently argue that that powerful boost of chemicals and the gustatory pleasure from eating caused our ancient ancestors to eat when they were not hungry, provided food was available. Those ancestors who ate when they were not hungry and developed a little extra fat were more likely to survive famine and reproduce, thus passing on genes that coded for brain chemistry that made people more likely to eat when not technically hungry.<

Now just because the body does that with extra food doesn't knock creation. Goodness, look at the machine God made this body to be. Who knows if we have even find out all about it yet.

Amen, Karrie. Probably not the place for this, but I believe that science doesn't contradict God, it just shows us how incredibly amazing He is.

Faith,

Yay on avoiding the cake! Retail therapy is always lots of fun. I have such a thing for shoes and purses. A great pick me up!

Also, Erin, you might want to include that through history, food has been used as peace offereing, tools for seduction - as it activates the pleasure centers in your brain - and

food has made people feel welcome, loved (hence the housewarming treats, new neighbor treats..)

Maybe gnome is not programmed to think that way.

Very true! Speaking of seduction, Saturday is our 4th anniversary. There is a fancy-schmancy restaurant in town that we always go to on our anniversary. We get a bottle of wine, and their cheese platter-it's a changing assortment of exotic imported cheeses with fruit and crusty bread, and creme brulee for desert. We didn't get to go last year because I was pregnant and soft cheeses and wine were definite no-nos. It's a once a year indulgence and I'm so excited for this year!

So, in summary, for me food is often more than just a way to stop hunger pangs. It can be a celebration, too!

Yes, but the trick is learning how to have-your-cake-and-eat-it-too, in other words how to have the celebration and eat things that taste wonderful without making bad food choices. Some are better than others, is all.

Some are better than others, I agree. I also agree that the trick is moderation. There really are no "bad" foods, just bad eating habits. Even the most "sinful" foods are just fine if you eat them very rarely and in small amounts.

Erin,

Moderation, yes...but not just moderation. I think there **are** some bad foods, or at least foods which are not too healthy for us and could even shorten life. Eating trans-fats (which you'll find in most packaged food) is a good example. I mean, who needs artery cloggers! I don't, and life not only tastes better without a lot of prepackaged stuff...life might even last a little longer with the simple elimination of them. Anyway, I try hard to do that.

And I'm all for having one's cake AND eating it too. Cake is a good example. I wouldn't eat cake very often at all, but for a birthday or something like that there's nothing to quite compare with a **homemade** angel food cake (low in calories, and ABSOLUTELY NO FAT) and then you poke holes into it and top with berries which, maybe, have been marinating. There are other ways, of course, to enjoy one's **cake** without blowing the calorie bank, and without eating unhealthy foods, but I kinda like that one myself.
