Oh Forte, **you're*** back. I was terrified after not ***hearing*** from you Friday that perhaps you had left our little ***board***. Imagine my complete joy and happiness when I find that you are not only back, but replying with such ***wisdom***, ***wit***, and ***foresight***.
I just came back from a 2 mile hike, shoeless at your suggestion.....besides the cuts from the sharp rocks and sticks, the bruises from the uneven, pebbly surface, the shin splints from lack of support, and the numerous broken toenails, I feel great! Who knew I was wasting so much money on shoes. I'm encouraging my kids to go shoeless also, although its against school rules and they'll be expelled, but I'll just show them your numerous diatribes on the benefits of just ***doing it*** shoeless as long as you're doing something.
As for losing weight in a timely fashion, I regret to inform you that its been quite a struggle for me. Perhaps you can clue me into your motivations and strengths that have proven so fruitful for you. Heaven knows, just listening to how ***easy*** it was for you has bummed me out, and with all the TV you've suggested we watch, its a little hard to get out and walk (even shoeless)---perhaps if you give me a timeline of your day, I too could be ***like*** you!
Thanks for all the help and suggestions that you, Astri, and Hippo have given the lowly likes of me. Its been a real help. Now I go to pop some yummies into my ice cream maker, sit down to watch 3 hours of Food Network, and dream of you.
Imagine HOW MANY activities don't require expensive workout shoes. I agree with Forte on that, and more than one athlete in fact gets the job done barefoot. Wish I could remember the guy who ran the Olympics barefoot, but there was also a Black woman a couple years ago, from Kenya (I think) who actually won an Olympic gold without shoes.
Some people make all kinds of excuses for why thay can't exercise, and footgear is one excuse frequently used by overweight people for their staying on the couch. If you have expensive shoes, how nice for YOU.....but it really isn't necessary. And I think some of you are defining "workout" way way too narrowly. Listen, if you're 100 lbs overweight chances are you won't be running any marathons soon. And the important thing is just to get out there and DO SOMETHING. And that's whether you own fancy footwear or can hardly pay the rent. Makes no difference, and workout shoes are optional. Of course, you could pick some activity for which shoes are superfluous too.
It's all about choice. Sorry about your feet ;)
hippolytes (who never wears shoes for long walks along the beach, or in the pool either, and certainly not while scuba diving....all great exercise BTW).
I'm with you there! I don't go to the gym, so no need for tennis shoes at one. When I walk, it's likely barefoot (on the beach) or wearing earth shoes. Then too, shopping can be good exercise, and I sure as heck don't wear workout shoes with my nice clothes after work when I stop to shop till I drop.
It's too bloody hot in the summertime to wear klunky workout shoes anyway.
Sorry to hear that you think workout shoes are klunky. I had knee surgery in 98, and make sure I wear GOOD, not expensive, but GOOD, sneakers since then. No more knee pain for me, so I guess it must be working. I also have never dealt with the back pain that many overweight people have, so I guess the shoes are helping there too.
Forte, I see the point you are trying to make, but maybe you could go about it without the jabs at Shawna about setting out to lose weight and actually doing it, and inferring (indirectly) that Shawna doesn't have it together.
>>Well, she's bright enough to **actually** lose all the weight she started out to lose, **and** keep it off for 14 years. And she's bright enough to parlee it into a lucrative career for herself. I'd say **SHE'S** got it together. <<
I believe the point you are trying to make (please correct me if I'm wrong)is that one shouldn't make excuses for not excersing simply because they don't have 100% appropriate equipment to do it. Yes, get out and walk any way you feel comfortable. Do what you can WHEN you can, every effort counts.
And something I noticed about you...you do your 'own' plans, don't follow anyones' diet or lifestyle, but I have seen half a dozen references to this Kathleen D person...seems like you hang on her words. I may be wrong.
>>How do you measure "bright," Shawna? <<
>>you don't need to wait for fancy footware to do it<<
Well, I would start with SPELLING CORRECTLY, first, Forte darling.
I agree, Mel..I own 'good' running shoes, which could never be called klunky. They weigh only OUNCES. And you can get those freaky-deaky ones that are open and have the sling backs but are still running shoes..weird looking, but made for runners.
Maybe Hippo doesn't have good shoe stores where she is.
I don't want to stir trouble but my brother is an M.D. and considered one of the nation's foremost experts on foot and ankle reconstruction and injury.
It is extremely important for overweight women to wear proper shoes. He recommends all shoes should be worn for support first.
Never ever exercise barefoot.
Never walk without proper arch support.
Don't mistake "sneakers" for exercise shoes.
Don't wear more than 1" heel if you are 25 or more pounds overweight.
I will ask him if he will post an article on this subject.

Good day to you now !
Amy
HAS IT ESCAPED YOUR NOTICE THAT NONE OF US HERE ARE OLYMPIC ATHLETES ????
IF WE WERE, WE PROBABLY WOULDN'T BE HERE !
FOR SUCH A SMALL SUB-SECTION OF THE POPULATION, EXPECTING EVERY DAY PSEUDO-ATHLETES TO
TRAIN AND WORK OUT LIKE PROFESSIONALS IS A BIT STUPID.
Where is the emoticon for annoyed ?
