Having to fast for three days....

I have to fast on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday because I'm having a colonoscopy done. Other than the fact that it SUCKS and I'm probably going to be really hungry, I'm thinking about the negative effect on my weight loss - I don't want to send my body into "starvation" mode and have my metabolism slow down. I'm allowed clear fluids - like broth or consomme, apple juice, and I'm not sure about diet sodas...I'll have to check on that. Any advice or opinions on what the best approach would be? I'm still doing Atkins, but thinking of dropping it for these three days because the sugar in juice might give me more energy...on the other hand, maybe avoiding sugar would be better to keep my blood sugars level. Also, do you think I should be exercising those days? Again - maybe I should to keep my metabolism up, or maybe I shouldn't because I'll have less energy. I'm a little confused!! Don't tell me to ask my doctor, since I have no way to contact him before the actual day of the test - besides, he's a Gastroenterologist, so will just tell me what I am and am not allowed without relating it to weight loss!

I had to do that. I went and got boullion cubes (like I can spell) and dropped them in really hot water.

Now I am not sure if they want you to do that, but I would call your family doctor and ask for some good things to drink down.

I was told not to exercise beyond normal activity because my energy level was going to dip very low.

Are they giving you that junk to make you GO?

I'm surprised you have to fast for 3 days! When I had a colonoscopy done last fall, I only had to fast for one. And I was able to eat a light breakfast the morning before, but nothing after that (I think it was because I was having it done later in the day). They just wanted me to fast for at least 24 hours. Do they have you drinking anything to clean out your system? If so, I would think that fasting for 3 days would be unnecessary. Believe me, this stuff cleans you out! You'll be running to the bathroom A LOT. And to be honest (and I don't want to scare you here), I'm not sure if it was the stuff they made me drink, or the fasting, but I didn't have any energy at all, so I don't think you'll be able to do any exercise. I was worried about the hunger during the fasting period, but I really didn't feel hungry at all. Again, I think it was from the stuff they make you drink. I would double check about the 3 days, though. I've never heard of that before. Good luck!

Oh yeah!!! But I begged and pleaded for a different "stuff". Last time I had to drink FOUR litres of disgusting crap - this time I just have to down to little bottles. I don't care how gross it is, I can drink a total of 8 ounces of just about anything!!! (Where's the "gagging" face icon???)

I had the small bottle, too. It's still disgusting, but you can down it pretty fast so you only gag for about a minute and then you're ok.

Yuck! Mine was supposedly lemon flavored. Didn't taste like any lemons I've ever had!

I have one every year - the reason for the 3 days is partially because they are giving me the two small bottles instead of the 4 litre jug, but also because they don't want my ulcerations aggravated before the test - because they would cause too much blood for them to really get a clear look (I have ulcerative colitis). So I HAVE done this before - but never while dieting, and it's always a struggle, even with the 1 or 2 day prep -this will be the LONGEST without food! Maybe I should try to catch the flu...then I won't feel like eating anyway :-)
