Having to fast for three days....

I have to fast on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday because I'm having a colonoscopy done. Other than the fact that it SUCKS and I'm probably going to be really hungry, I'm thinking about the negative effect on my weight loss - I don't want to send my body into "starvation" mode and have my metabolism slow down. I'm allowed clear fluids - like broth or consomme, apple juice, and I'm not sure about diet sodas...I'll have to check on that. Any advice or opinions on what the best approach would be? I'm still doing Atkins, but thinking of dropping it for these three days because the sugar in juice might give me more energy...on the other hand, maybe avoiding sugar would be better to keep my blood sugars level. Also, do you think I should be exercising those days? Again - maybe I should to keep my metabolism up, or maybe I shouldn't because I'll have less energy. I'm a little confused!! Don't tell me to ask my doctor, since I have no way to contact him before the actual day of the test - besides, he's a Gastroenterologist, so will just tell me what I am and am not allowed without relating it to weight loss!

I had the small bottle, too, but I'm not in the same situation as you. I'm sorry you have to go through this! I have to go every three years now, because they found two polyps and one was pre-cancerous. My mother died of colon cancer when I was a kid, so I'm prone to it. Since they found the polyps, I have to go every three years so I kind of know what you're going through. That sucks that you have to go that long without eating, though! I was told I could have apple juice, tea, clear broth, jello (as long as it wasn't red or orange) and I can't think of what else right now, but if I think of it, I'll let you know. I think I could have soda as long as it was clear like Sprite or 7up. I'll be thinking about you!

It's a good thing you are sedated for this, because if I had to starve for 3 days and then have a stranger stick something in my butt, they'll have to have a tranquilizer dart gun on hand cause I may get a little fiesty.

Try lots of H2O, chicken and veggie broth, watered down juices, tea, water with lemo,. If you get really bad, get some glucose tabs - just NOT the watermelon flavor.

I had to fast for 3 days, and after 24 hours I felt fine..the hunger pains went away.

Other than that, I have no sage advice except avoid food sights, sounds and smells, because then instinct takes over and you will become She-Beast.

LOL - thanks for the advice. You are right about that! I hear so many people who dread the actual procedure - but that part is no biggie, as far as I'm concerned. The meds they give me are kinda fun ;-) It's the three days of not eating that I dread - and then you are SUPPOSED to take it easy (soft foods only) for a couple days after.

That really does stink, especially since you have to do that over a holiday weekend.

I'm sure **other* people who have a colonoscopy done also have to fast beforehand, and surely doctors wouldn't have patients fast *if* it sent the "body into starvation mode" or did some tremendous damage. In other words, I wouldn't worry too much about it if I were you. It's a fairly common procedure, and it's important to your health or the doctor wouldn't have ordered it. Have a good weekend.

Well, per your advice should you report needing the same procedure none of us will worry.

BUT I find it revolting that you diminish someone else's concerns because YOU wouldn't worry.

Well, at least that isn't an issue, since it isn't a holiday here in Canada - we had ours last week (Victoria Day). Fortunately, I don't work on Monday, so I can do lots of fun things to distract myself.
