OK well it looks like I have made the jump from IBS to IBS & GERD.

I have HORRID heartburn, which I have never had before. It woke me up at 1 this morning and has been there ever since. I also have this horrid taste in my mouth, so...

Anyone out there in message board land have GERD? I have done some looking up of it and it looks like I might be in the early stages of it, but I would love from first hand knowledge of it.

I am checking with here especially since GERD and IBS go hand in hand.

I don't ever have heartburn so this is surprising to me. There are other symptoms that I have but I am not going to share here since it would be GROSS. ewwwww

I was hoping I would be one of the few people that don't have both. I am also hoping you might be right that it may not be it...nasty thing. I don't want to go thru all the tests again.

Karrie, I've had GERD since I had my gall-bladder removed in 1996. I take Protonix and Metaclopromide. I also no longer eat Potato chips or drink very many carbonated beverages (1-3 a month). Other things upset my stomach so I avoid them too. I sleep mostly on my left side because it take the pressure off my stomach. The best med for me was Propulsid, but the FDA took it off the market. there are lots of OTC products out there; Prisolec, Pepcid, Tagamet, Zantac, etc. In the begining I had really good luck with the Pepcid ( took four at a time) and I have used generic Zantac. Sometimes GERD can be caused by a bacterial infection ( Helicobacter Pylori). You would need to see your doctor to be tested for this. There is a blood test and also a breath test. If you find you are positive for this organism it can be treated with an antibiotic and one of the proton pump inhibitors ( I don't remember for how long I think two weeks but don't quote me on that). In my case my GERD is cause by a hiatal hernia (caused by my being obese):(. Another thing is gallblader disease can make you have GERD and IBS symptoms.

Again something to discuss with your doctor. There are lots of prescription meds out there too. Good Luck! Hugs, Brenda

Well, ya'll I am going to answer everyone...

I have IBS and it looks to be that GERD and IBS go hand in hand. This is the second time in a month that I have had heartburn and the first to have it last a full 16 hours with an after taste.

What they are going to do is have me take ptilosec and see if that helps. She (the doc) is hoping this is a one time thing and will go away. if not then I go in for the blood work and get scoped...AT BOTH ENDS!!!!!

I hate the burping most of all though...never burped so much in my life. :)

I am hoping this is going to be gone this next day.

I've never heard of GERD before, but I kind of get an idea what it is by your descripion of how you feel. I hope that it's not too unpleasant for you and I hope you feel better, Karrie!

Just a question...is this something you have had for a while or did it just start? I ask because I have been having heartburn issues for a little over six months now.
