Nate has been wanting one of them motorized scooters… he said he wanted one for his 9th birthday I was like oh he!! No…. first of all they are like 500 bucks… second of all he don’t need motorized….

Today I went to Toys R Us to get some ideas and they had motor scooters that said 8 and up and they only went like 8mph that’s slower then he rides his bike! They have 3 wheels instead of only 2 so I started to think if maybe this one would be safe enough for him but I still don’t know if I can allow my still a baby on something that runs without foot power lol.. What do yall think?

I think no matter how hard we try, kids will find a way to hurt themselves. LOL!

For example- Rina broke her arm in two places while scurrying from one room into another and tripping over someone's foot. Ramey broke his arm on a foot-powered scooter. Personally, I've broken my left leg three times.

I think the 8mph hour one sounds relatively safer than the ones that go 15mph, and if I had the money I'd probably let Ramey have one (he's 9 too). I do make Ramey and Rina wear a helmet when they skate, roller blade, or use the scooter, so that would be a suggestion I'd have. Other than that, say lots of prayers and keep your dr's number on speed dial :-)

I feel the same way Kerstin. My son will be 11 next month and a few of the kids in the neighborhood have them, but I've seen how they totally ignore everything around them and feel that the road is theirs.I'm just to paranoid that my son will be the same and something bad happen. Not that that can't happen on a bike as well...but the kids that I've seen seem more wreckless on the scooters then anything else.

I have to agree with Furry - if it goes faster than you can run, you're gonna hurt yourself. I myself have been know to get hurt standing still (fell off my high-heel flip flop). I would take into consideration the amount of traffic on your street and ALSO find out what the state law says about motorized scooters, how old you have to be to operate, can you do it on the sidewalk or not - some towns have an ordinance against such activity....talk to an officer at your local PD - they can fill you in on what's allowed, safety risks, and percentages of accidents and calls they get about children on motorized scooters. Trust me - I do this ALL DAY.

Good luck!

very good point ladies .... but let me add this we live on a fairly busy street(its one of the main roads from our county to the next... and we are not in a neighborhood so nate is not allowed out of our gate.... he rides his bike and as well as the scooter (if we agree) in our yard... its 300ftx100ft so theres plenty of room.... he just has to watch out for our 4 pines tress 1 pecan 1 oak and our magnolia tree lol.... oh and our 2 dogs..

let me add this also Frankie tought him how to ride our lawnmower last year so he pretty well understands steering and stuff with moterized... we just dont let the blades down and run... i guess i should have said this in the first post but i am not sure it matters.... TIA

OK Here's the response from the paranoid Mom of the year. No. NO POWERED SCOOTER. We live in a small community and I've about hit the kids on them 2 or 3 times. They are always darting into traffic. Scares me! My 11yo would like one too. Not happening. Too expensive (to start with). I also make my boys wear helmets on their manual scooters and bikes. So there's my two cents worth. Hugs, Brenda

well if you think your son can do it i don't see why not. Each kid is different and can handle different things at different ages. I don't know anything about scooters. But my nephew is 5 and has a 4 wheeler and several cousins' kids and nieces and nephews ride it.They live in the country and have acres of land so don't worry about cars so i would just be sure you had the room because a lot of drivers don't pay attention. I have a problem with letting my dd try new things to and i have to stop myself at times. She rode my cousin's kids 4 wheeler last year and he has a hand brake so he ran after her..lol..and braked when needed
