I am just full of questions this morning!

I got an email from a friend, and before passing it on, thought I would come here and ask about it.

Basically, the email states the dangers of Apsertame, namely the ingredient used in artificial sweeteners.

Ingest enough of ANYTHING and it will have an effect on you. Splenda has been used in Canada for over 10 years and it is made from sugar. It has had an (oxygen or hydrogen, can't remeber at the moment) molecule taken away and the remaining molecules flipped around, so the body doesn't recognize it as someting digestible - it's also called a 'left-handed sugar, and has a designation of L in front of it's chemical name instead of a D - it is very heat stable which is why it PRICELESS for cookng and baking.

Kyle is diabetic and I'm fat so we have been using it for over a year, and love it. I don't use a tone, but Sweet n Low gives me a headache and I'll use Equal if nothing else is available. Most government studies like this are perfomed on rats because of their high metabolice rate - you don't have to wait years to see results. rats are very prone to cancer and are very sensitive to carcinogens. Also, the amount they feed them would it to be translated into the same amount for a person, it would be impossible to consume that much.

Splenda has a very informative website, too. I checked it out before I started using it in any great quantity.

So who's gonna try it FIRST?

Oh, I'll give it a whirl..I'll look for one in the store on my way to work..they have every beverage under the sun, so if I get it, I'll post here later and let you guys know. I'll at least try it, but depending on the sugar levels, I may not drink the whole thing...

Thanks Mel for that link. I usually drink about two glasses of caffeine-free diet pepsi and eat some yogurt that contains aspartame. Thinking I'd have to give them up made me very unhappy! To lose weight you have to give up enough so I'm glad they won't have to go too.

Pepsi just came out with one that's half the sugar too, called Pepsi Edge.......I tried it while grocery shopping and it was pretty good, it does taste a little diety but not as much as regular diet.

I agree with the Splenda in the coffee..real sugar in my coffee makes my face cave in to the back of my head (everyone have the visual?)and something else that Atkins mentions is that some sweetenets (artificial) actualy prolong your craving for sweets and such. There may be something to that, because for a while just the THOUGHT of sweets or junk masde me nauseated. Coincidentally, several years ago when I started Prozac, it completely killed my sweet tooth and all I ate for a month was broccoli. Thats IT. I wanted nothing but broccoli. When I started the Effexor XR this February, it killed my appetite completely and food was such a turnoff. I know this has nothing to do with sugar directly but when your enzymes, hormones and neurotransmitters get fiddled with I think there is an effect on the sweet tooth.
