Cool whip, like any *processed food,* has some artificial ingredients. If it were me, and those were the only choices, I'd make the real stuff. But that's me.

I think maybe what she's asking is what is used to make it.It tastes like cool whip but holds a nice texture and doesn't melt.

Sorry Des...I've never made it myself, but have wanted to,because thats what frosting I like. It's not as sweet as the canned frosting you buy.

Could this work for you? It's not a diet friendly recipe, but heck when it comes to birthdays thats not really the point :o) Vikki

*White Buttercream Frosting*

Ingredients

3 bars (6-oz. box) NESTLÉ TOLL HOUSE Premier White Baking Bars broken into pieces

1/4 heavy cup whipping cream

1 (2 sticks) cup butter cut into pieces

1 cup powdered sugar

Directions

MICROWAVE baking bars and cream in medium, uncovered, microwave-safe bowl on MEDIUM-HIGH (70%) power for 1 minute; STIR. The bars may retain some of their shape. If necessary, microwave at additional 10 to 15-second intervals, stirring just until melted.

TRANSFER mixture to large mixer bowl; cool to room temperature. Beat in butter until creamy. Gradually beat in powdered sugar until light and fluffy.

Yes, I see that in the re-reading. My mistake. I think my mom use to frost a cake with whipped cream, flavored, though. Or maybe it *was* cool whip. I dunno.

It's called Dream Whip. From like back in the 70's. My mom used it all the time. It's white, fluffy, holds together better than cool whip b/c I'm pretty sure it doesn't need to be refridgerated...it doesn't break down. I know my grocery store still carries it...I think it's in a blue/white/red box (I could be mistaken on that one thought). If you don't want to use that or can't find it and want to use cool whip, you can beat it with a little corn starch, cream of tarter or baking soda to make it more stiff and to keep it together longer.

Hi Des751,

It's actually a non-dairy whipped cream. Do you live near a Sam's or Wal-mart? They will sell it to you by the pound, or at least

my mom used to get some kind of topping that came in a square carton, kind of like a drink box, and she'd add some powdered stiffener. That was in the mid-80's, don't know if either product is sold anymore. Now I like my cakes absolutely frosting free.
