I'd say, right now, you really really need to listen to your doctor's advice, and follow it to the letter. Did your OB give you a "special" diet, list foods to eat and which to avoid, or anything like that? I bet if you ask for some written instructions from the OB, then your own doctor will likely provide that kind of info. Good luck.

Ugh Des....Hmm you could possibly look at the Sugarbusters diet and see what the no-no's are.

Sorry to hear that. Having never been pregnant, not really sure what it is or how it affects you and your baby but I would go back to the doctor (or call) and ask for a nutritional plan or can he/she recommend a list of what to eat and what not to. I can't imagine a doctor telling you just no starches and 2000 cals per day without some other guidance. Or another thing is to check ivillage for a pregnancy board and see if someone else is/has experienced what you're going through. Good luck to you though. And hope you and your lovely baby to be stay healthy!

Agreeing with what everyone else has stated so far.Sorry to hear about the GD Des...it's gotta suck I know =( Talk some more with your Dr.or see if you can chat with a nutritionist, and if you do...just see what they say about the Sugarbusters book that Shawna mentioned.I've heard really good things about it,so it may have some ideas for you to try.

Good luck and ((hugs))!

Des, Can you tell me how high your glucose tolerance test was? I had gestational diabetes with my second. I controlled it with diet. The big thing is simple sugars. Avoid juices of all kinds (even tomato). They rush to the blood the fastest and will cause your sugar to spike. Avoid any sugar liquids for the same reason. Avoid fruit, it is sugar in it's purest form. It's best to stay away from yellow and white veggies. Yes, that includes potatoes. Try also to stay away from noodles and rice. Tomatoes can be a real problem. My patients always think they should be able to eat them, but they can't. If you can keep your sugars under 160mg/dl most doctors will let you get by with just diet. When did you eat last before your glucose tolerance test? There needs to be at least a 10 hour fast before drinking the glucola 50. Also, have you been drinking any pop lately? This can cause an elevated GTT. If you have any specific questions let me know and I will try to help you out. Good Luck. Hugs, Brenda

PS I feel for you! After my #2 son was born all I wanted was a package of Oreos and a Margarita.:)

As far as what my doc said they said best to try to find some diets on the net until I can make it up there and they but said stay away from carbs and no more then 2000 cal… I know a lot of you are on low carb diets or have been…. Its going to hard I know I live on potatos ugghhh lol

Brenda …. I know my 1 hour it was 179 that’s with no fasting I didn’t get the numbers for the 3 hour fasting one yet…. They said nothing past midnight but I didn’t eat after 9 I was there at 6 am so I guess I didn’t have a full 10 hours your patients? What is it you do again Brenda? Sorry Prego brain I forgot…. Des, I am a medical technologist and I do some diabetic counseling for the clinic I work in. You say your 1 hour was 179, was that a random sugar? or 1 hour after drinking the glucola? You say your 3 hour fasting, is that three hours after the glucola? You had a nine hour fast and that's pretty good. When I was pregnant I ended up eating a lot of protein and veggies. I was able to keep my sugars around 110 by doing that. the big thing that scares me is 20% of all gestational diabetics become full blown diabetics within twenty years. I've already wasted 8 years being fat and 20 will come up on me too fast. I've got to get this weight off I do not want diabetes. Get the weight off will help my chances. 9 months of sticking my fingers was more than enough for me.

Hugs to you and the baby, Brenda

Wow you’re the person I need to be talking to!! Unless you get sick of talking about it at work then I understand… the 179 came after glucola I guess its called I drank it and they drew it 1 hour after I finished it… with the three hour they drew before the then waited like 20 minutes then I drank the stuff then every hour for 3 hours, they did urine and drew blood,,, I was there for a little over 4 hours…. It was torture it wouldn’t have been so bad if we was allowed at least a little water….. It didn’t help dr said I was dehydrated so by the time it was over I was really feeling like crappyola diabetes runs in my family my sister was insulin dependant before she had her weight loss surgery but I really don’t know to much about the subject…. If you have msn messenger and want to discuss it anymore please add me desiree741@hotmail.com thanx for all your help!
