Be patient. You didn't gain it overnight and you won't lose it overnight either.

When I topped out at 270, I was sooo depressed. I thought, "There is NO way I'm ever going to lose this weight!" However, I knew I had to. I was getting short of breath, had no energy, and was becoming agoraphobic around people. I just wanted to hide in the house when I wasn't working.

I started out counting calories in October 2003. Then, I added exercise after the holi-daze. SO far, I've lost about 45lbs, gained back about 5 of them from falling off the wagon (pigging out, bad DEB!). I also got a bit over zealous with my workouts and aggravated my bad knee. It's feeling better, but no more step aerobics for me. I'll do the tapes without the step and still get a great workout. Since I've taken a break for several weeks from exercising, I'm pretty much back at square one condition wise. But that's ok! When I start up again, I should lose again. Sometimes it's GOOD to take a break. But it can be bad too...especially if you don't get right back to it.

I found that there are 3 components to losing weight:

1) An eating plan that works for YOU. There are many out there, you gotta research them and try out several that are do-able for you.

2) Exercise. Cardio and weights are good. Cardio will burn that fat, be great for your heart, and give you energy. Weight training will give you good muscle and burn calories 24 hours a day! No, you will not look like Ah-nold! Women who bulk up work out with heavy weights 4-6 hours a day. The 45 mins to an hour routine I do (Gilad Step & Tone--without the step for me!) will give you lean muscles. There are other taped DVD's that combine free weights and aerobics. Check them out!

3) A support system. This can be a friend, a support group like "Tops" or "Weight Watchers", or this board. I like this board. It's open 24 hours, most everyone is supportive, and you can post as much or as little as you like. I haven't been around much due to some turbulence in my life, but I still get in here from time to time. There are quite a few lovely ladies here (and man Catfisherman--haven't forgotten you!) who would be happy to help you out!

Another way I've heard about dealing with a large amount of weight to lose is to think in 10-20 pound increments, like Shawna suggested, or "Losing 1 pound 145 times."

I just wanted to address something that you posted in another thread about your doctor's suggestion that exercise should be at least 45 minutes at a time. That is simply ridiculous. Every little bit adds up, whether it's taking the stairs at the office or a little walk during your lunch hour, IT ALL COUNTS. The other advice your doctor gave about eating is good - just don't quit exercising because you feel you don't have time!

That said, good luck, and welcome to the boards.
