Anyone see Supersize Me?

I was curious if anyone else has seen this movie. I had a really bad week last week so my husband pretty much made me go out on Saturday to have some alone time. I went to the local independent theater, had some wine (ahhh) and saw Supersize Me.

It's a documentary about the obesity epidemic, but it revolves around one man and his quest to eat nothing but McDonald's for one solid month. He gains 25 lb., feels awful and develops liver problems. The movie was a major impetus for McDonalds to drop super sizes and introduce the go active! adult happy meals.

I would love to hear what you all thought about it.

I personally haven't eaten McDonald's for many months, and this film didn't really make me want to change, but it was an interesting commentary on obesity.

Hi Erin,

I've been keeping an eye out for this movie, and really wanted to see it. It was "advertised" in our local multiplex, a long while ago, but the poster in the hallway isn't there now....and the movie has yet to come to our area. I've read about it though....numerous times....including a June 7 review in Time magazine, if you saw that? (The special issue of Time dealing with Obesity in America).

Nope, he only ate supersize if they specifically asked him if he wanted it. I think he supersized 9 times in the course of the month (six of them were in Texas, because everything's bigger in texas, of course). He also ate each menu item at least once but other than that was free to eat the salads or whatever was on the menu (though he described really starting to crave the high fat foods and feeling addicted after a while).

Nope, I didn't see Time that week. We are so lucky to have a theater that specializes in independent movies. It's pretty new and for a small city I'm so happy to have the chance to see less mainstream films (not that I do it much since I have a baby).

Ugh. The hype over this movie gives me a headache. For some left-of-center, anti-corporate, anti-globalization types, McDonald's is a symbol of all that is wrong with Western culture. Fine. But c'mon--who wouldn't gain weight eating over 5,000 calories a day, regardless of the source?

Somehow I doubt the average American consumes over 5,000 calories a day eating three meals from McDonald's. The results of Spurlock's "experiment" were easy to predict, but they prove nothing about the obesity epidemic in this country that we didn't already know.

I kind of agree with you here in that we are always looking for someone else to blame for our problems.
