Farmer's Markets

Hi,
On saturday I went to the local farmer's market. I'm getting addicted. There is nothing nicer than truly fresh food. Here's what I got: fresh feta cheese, basil, three kinds of local garlic, shallots (like a cross between onion and garlic if you've never tried them-great for cooking), fresh mushrooms and organic sundried tomato rolls. All of it is wonderful.

Does anyone else go to the farmer's market? If you are someone who thinks that they don't like fruits or veggies, I highly recommed trying out some fresh (and new) varities.

HAHAHAHA!! Ivillage told me I had to edit this message because of an objectionable word. My mushrooms were shiitake, and I spelled them the more americanized way with only one i.

You're right....it's no guarantee. Sometimes the "produce stands" (not all, some) get their stuff from the same suppliers as the neighborhood groceries do. That's why it's good to know what to look for, and coming from a farm environment as you do (I grew up on a farm also) you know already. For others, it's a dead give away if the produce stand in Wisconsin is selling "fresh" peanuts or bananas! Neither product growing in your neck of the woods! Another way, is to ask questions (just idle chit chat..."do you have fields nearby?" that sort of thing). I can generally tell, walking through a farmers market, or someplace like Pike Place market in Seattle...which stands are connected to farms and which merely buy wholesale and sell retail.
But, truth be told, nothing really beats just sticking your own tomato plant in a planter (if you live in an apartment and don't have a garden) and just doing it yourself! I don't like pesticides, and so I seek out organic green grocers and farmers at the markets who are like-minded....but when it's grown at my place, then surely I KNOW what I'm getting, and it tastes so much BETTER when picked still warm from the sun and eaten within minutes of picking anyway!

(Mmmm, baby cow smells delicious....but I refuse to eat veal, so they are safe)

And I could have SWORN I chewed it, too.
