Have you ever tried them? It's a sweet, wonderful fruit, and if you like kiwi then you'll probably like lychees. Anyway, they are ripe American grown (California, Florida) from June-July and I found some in the store over the weekend. I just learned that 15 lychee nuts have only 100 calories, 1 gram fat, and they are exceptionally high in vitamin C. If you see them in your store, this might be a food find you'd enjoy.

Vitamin C in Fruits

Fruits with the most vitamin C, in order, are

Strawberries

Oranges

Kiwi

Lychees

Canteloupe

Mangoes

Gooseberries

Grapefruit

Raspberries

Pineapple (The American Dietetic Association, 1995)

With defference to the person who doesn't like canteloupe, oh gosh...I love all of these! Of course, I love fresh fruit generally and this is, doubtless, my favorite time of year!!!

Long, long ago I tried a horned melon (I don't usually see them in groceries here) but I can't remember what it tasted like, if anything. I stopped at the store last night, and you'd love it because mangos are 25 cents each here now! I picked up one, which is in my kitchen window at the moment.

Ok, call me weird "WEIRD!!!", but I tried papaya and HATED it ! I have had mangoes off the tree in Barbados (heaven)and I had a different subspecies of mango (I think they were called Champagne mangoes) in the bahamas, and they were disgusting. If I told you they tasted like....Cheetos(?) would you believe me?

I know, I know....

25 cents ?!? How funny - the price range depending on the season. Right now they are .79, and in the winter I see them for 3.99. I am always reminded of barbados when I pick one up and smell it. They have a lovely aroma, and I swear I could get high standing in front of the peach/nectarine/mango cart....

*sigh*

I don't like watermelon either, I'll eat it, but I don't like it. I won't eat any other type of melon, ESPECIALLY cantelope. The smell of that alone is enough to make me want to vomit.

Amy,

I like the champagne mango too: the smaller, yellow (when ripe) ones...right?! Those I can find for 79 cents right now, but yes the regular mango are just a quarter each. I like papaya, but not alone (it has to be made into something). I make a mean papaya mango salsa with cilantro, red onion, garlic (and pineapple, if I have it). Goes great with fish, especially....and so low in calories as to be ridiculous.

I've never been to Barbados...sounds like fun!

Forte,

It WAS fun. Speaking of mango salsas, I made one with mango, cukes, cilantro, onion and a little orange juice. Had it with grilled chicken and OH BOY it was yummy. Something about the texture of papayas turn me off. They are slimy like Okra (PUKE).

I did not see the Dateline show, but have been hearing/seeing the buzz about artificial sweeteners and the link to eating problems, because they trick your brain into wanting more sweet stuff, so you consume more food. Fortunately, that is not the case for me, but if I have bread, or a bagel or a bowl of cereal, I become a processed flour nightmare. The minute it hits my mouth, I can't get enough.

Anyone ELSE ever eat FOUR bowls of Cookie Crisp ??? Hmmmmm?

Yeah, what is up with hatin' on Cantaloupe ? Okay, cantaloupe cut up and sitting in the fridge for too long is vile (like on par with rotting marigolds), but I love it, and Honeydew. Unfortunately, melon does not love me. I will not elaborate.
