Y'know...something in Forte's post struck a bell (DING!)...about the Gov't and corn subsidies, promoting prepacked foods...is anyone else under the impression that the Gov't is NOT looking out for our best interest and maybe even TRYING to keep us fat, while pretending to care by saying we should eat better and excercise more? After all, our Gov't is a business, don't ever forget that - and this viscious cycle Americans are caught in is MAKING THEM SOME SERIOUS BANK. Between land, corn subsidies, pharmaceutical companies, gov't programs...by keeping us fat, they make $$$. Because despite America having a $40 billion dollar diet industry, WE ARE GETTING FATTERFATTERFATTER.
Something positively STINKS here (and I haven't even seen Michael Moore's 9/11 yet)....
Waiting for a unidentified Gov't person to knock on the door and take me away now....
Oh gosh, just what we need, a tax increase to pay for billions and billions of dollars worth of research before our federal government, finally, comes to the obvious conclusion. I'd just cut to the chase, and argue obesity is a matter of individual responsibility that should be corrected by diet and exercise. It's not something medicare should be involved with. Not at all.
Seriously - it scares me to think that the crap (Gov't subsidized)that they put in school cafeterias, and all the time and energy that goes into producing, packaging, advertiing and promoting in - store for processed foods, which in the end, make you fat. (Not that I don't scarf down the Kraft Mac n'Cheese every so often).
And in Hippolytes post about gov't funding and why should they dump $$ into this obesity research, come on - the gov't funds some of the most ridiculous projects out there, although I can't name one off the top of my pointy wet head, and are famous for doing the same damn thing over and over agin and failing but expecting different results. I believe in some circles this is known as insanity.
Yes, people CHOOSE to actively pick up the food and put it in their face. But WHY? And WHY is it SO EASY to get ahold of things that are proven to be bad for us ? Twinkies, ciggies, soda, Betty Crocker Home Bakes, corned beef hash, margarine...
Because the gov't would lose so much money, and then they couldn't fund the program for over a million dollars to develop an pen that writes in the zero gravity of space. The Russians solved this pressing issue for free. They use a PENCIL.
Coming from Canada I guess I've never had to worry about what's covered and what isn't covered. Our health care system may not be perfect but it's always there.
Anyway, does anyone know what exactly medicare will cover? Is it surgery, weightloss programs, etc? And may I ask, if obesity is a matter of choice, should people who smoke be denied medical treatment for cancer, emphazima and a host of other medical conditions? Or someone who attempts suicide, do we charge them for their medical care? How do we decide what's covered and what isn't when just about everything we do is a matter of choice - right down to driving over the speed limit.
ROFLMAO!! Gov't couldn't pay me enough to measure cow farts, or it's effects on the ozone...I love cows, but only one end. And those TONGUES!!!! Those things are unnatural!
I'm fascinated by your viewpoint. What is the "obvious conclusion?"
That fat people are lazy or stupid or just have no willpower?
Perhaps they'll come to the obvious conclusion that mutations of the dopamine d2 receptor predispose people to obesity? Or perhaps that certain people get a stronger shot of endogenous opioids after eating carbohydrates or fatty foods? Or the obvious conclusion that serotonergic pathways in the brain are altered in those who tend to binge or gain weight easier? Or perhaps that fat cells themselves produce powerful chemical messengers that create cravings and feelings of hunger?
There is a lot more to the science of obesity than you seem to realize. I'd encourage you to check it out, or at least to call up the National Institutes of Health and explain to them the "obvious conclusion" about obesity.
You are the first person to get that reference! Thanks Amy! I'm a bit of a mythology geek and not many people have ever heard of Freya. I decided to use the name as I'm a tall, blonde and 'healthy' woman.

Amy, I have already thought about that and hinted to it in one of my past posts.
