I like mine short but the last time I got a pedicure the esthetician said I should grow my nails so she could do a french pedicure on them...that sounds ick.
If my toenails are too long, they'll slice through socks/nylons.
My fingernails are also cut ALL the way down...no white at all!
I did nails in a salon for five years, and the only thing I can think of, is her concern for ingrown nails, especially on the big toe. Also, sometimes if any nails on the feet are cut too short and are sharp on the corners, the act of being in shoes can push the sharp tip into the flesh, creating an infection. I personally keep my toenails short on all the toes with the exception of the big toe, which has a nail about 1/16 of an inch. my toes are rather long and slender so when I ram them into something, I'm sure it's broken.
Spammy - French pedicures are just plain WRONG. ACK!
Rely - I agree. I get a pedicure every 2 weeks and they are always yelling at me to grow my toe nails. I actually cut them before I go because I know they won't! I go to an Asian/Vietnamese salon (there are so many around here) and the ladies in there all have long toe nails. I also agree about the ingrown thing. If you cut too short that's what will happen, so I'm pretty much in the middle I guess. Yes, french pedicures were all the rage and so many women still getting them done, but they are very out now. I've never, I always wear color on my toes but once again agree with Amy...french pedicures are very wrong! (can you tell this is a topic close to me? Sheesh, I am high maintenance I guess!)
For me, long enough to look good with paint, but not so long that they catch up on my socks or hose...And I have wide feet, so when I put on shoes, and my nails are too long, they tend to cut into the side of my toes.

I also have a problem with ingrown toenails, so I try to keep them a little longer, especially the two first toes.
Happy Pedicuring!
