Anyone here counting calories?

Hi! Anyone here count calories as a form of weight loss? There are so many diets out there, so many things to get confused about. I've tried Atkins, lost 45 lbs, now I'm trying Carb Addicts. But what I keep hearing overall....it's the calories that matter.

For as much as I've cut down my eating the pounds should be melting off, IMHO. I'm curious about the proper guidelines for calories. For example, over the weekend I read that if your goal is 140 lbs, multiply that by 13 making your calorie intake for losing 1,820. In my case, I want to weigh 180. I'm just wondering if that's an appropriate calculation. I've seen so many websites with calorie needs calculators and each one is a bit different, I'm confused and not sure how many I should eat per day. I'm not an active person, 2 small kids and a full time job, doesn't leave a lot of time for exercise.

Would love to hear from anyone!

Thanks!

There are so many things and so much advice as to how many calories you should actually eat during the course of a day.

Hi,

Yup, I count calories and pay attention to fat grams. That's all I do. I eat fresh foods, not anything pre-packaged, and I get a little exercise of some sort daily (maybe a walk, maybe a dance class, whatever I want). That sums it up.

How many? It has to do with height, age, activity level. One way to figure, is to use a calorie calculator (fitday.com has one, but there are others) and determine how many calories are appropriate for your ideal weight, at your height and activity level. But it's all up to you. I think the important thing is just to start somewhere, and keep it up. One place to start (and a good place) is by going to your doctor, discussing your desire to lose weight, get a clean bill of health there and then follow the doctor's recommendations in terms of how many calories would be best in your specific situation.
