Newbie Needs Some Motivation!!

Hi all,

My name is Stephanie. I am 25 years old, 5'3", and 265 lbs. (takes a lot to admit that!)

A bit of personal history: At age 20, I was diagnosed with Dysthymia, a chronic mild depression. Up until age 22, I was strapped with a lot of emotional baggage. At age 22, I finally began taking my antidepressants regularly, and currently do, which helped (and continue to help) me a lot.

I gained 80 pounds between 1998-1999, I think due to some life changes, relationship problems, and lack of attention to my own needs, and have not been able to lose it.

Long story short, I tried Weight Watchers twice, lost weight (the most I lost at once was 37 lbs), and now am at the biggest I have ever been.

I am fairly successful at my job, am in graduate school, have plenty of friends and an active social life, got married in 10/03, and am otherwise pretty content with my life.

I know, however, that contentment at five-three and 265 pounds is not a good idea healthwise.

I was wondering if anyone can lend me some support and/or motivation to lose this weight. It seems so impossible to me to have to lose 130 pounds!

Help!!

Thanks, Stephanie

Hi Stephanie and welcome! I know it seems like it's nearly impossible to lose that much weight, but it isn't. Thinking about the big picture can be overwhelming, so I like to break up my weight loss into smaller increments. Try thinking about just 5 or 10 pounds at a time. Those small goals will eventually add up and you will see a big loss. Also, and I can't stress this enough, BE PATIENT. We would all like to see big losses each week, but unfortunately that doesn't always happen. I try to celebrate any loss, even if it's just one pound. You've come to the right place for support and encourgement, so pull up a chair and jump right in :)

hey, stephanie!

Congrats for stepping up and deciding to do something. I have been in the planning stages for a long time. In 2002, I lost about 70 pounds. But since then I have been losing and gaining the same five pounds. I am not even going to go into the details about how frustrating that is. Like you I have about 130 more to go. I have no idea how I am going to do it. I wish you all the luck in the world. But what I know so far...is that losing a lot of weight has very little to do with luck and a lot to do with HARD WORK!!! If you should hit a couple of hurdles and can't foresee jumping over them...feel free to use me as a spring board of sorts. Contact me through this message board, or email me. rndmgirl@comcast.net. Oh, by the way...I'm Cora...Look forward to hearing from you. Remember...never give up!

Wow,

We have a lot in common. I'm 26, 5'3" and 245. I've also had dysthymia and am a graduate student. I've also done WW a number of times (along with atkins and calorie counting and carb addicts, etc). It is possible to lose weight. I truly believe that you can do it if you set your mind to it and make small goals. I've always tripped myself up in the past by deciding that I have "THE PLAN" that will solve all of my problems. Now I'm trying to take it day by day and am not following a set program (though many others here are with success).

I think posting here is a good first step!
