Hi all!

New to the site - and Australian, so I sit here with my pounds to kilos converter! I'm a 20 year old College student, I work and study most days for the larger part of the day, 6 days a week. My 7th is spent sleeping! I'm having real troubles finding time to excercise. Any hints for little things I can do to increase my excercise?

I'm finding it hard to diet because I have spent years being known to my friends and family as a very confident person, who doesn't care how I look, someone with high self esteem. Now I care, mainly because of my health, I am too proud to make the "I am dieting" statement. Any tips on how to keep it low key? It sounds ridiculous, I know. But to admit that I was unhappy with how I look would be like admitting to living a lie. Is this unusual?

I have 125 pounds to lose to reach my goal weight. Scary, so I'm thinking of setting myself little goals. Aim for 10 pounds. Then aim to lose 15 pounds...far less daunting.

Also, (.....sorry!......) any tips on how to help stop cravings, I read the stuff on the Ivillage articles, but nothing was practical enough. What are your tips?

I just wanted to welcome you to the board! I kind of suck at this weightloss thing right now so I don't have any good tips. I am still learning myself. Good Luck to you.

Hi Rosetoes! Welcome!

I only really began trying to lose weight almost three weeks ago. My biggest issues have been grazing...oh I'm terrible for it! So to keep myself from poking my head in the fridge, especially at night when loneliness sets in, I keep a picture of me at my heaviest and one of me at my smallest...it usually helps.

If that doesn't put me off, I floss and brush my teeth...right now I have the cleanest teeth in Calgary.

And finally, if I'm still tempted I come here to the message boards and read about people's successes and struggles...that way I realize that I'm not alone in this and others have made it.

As for exercise, I ended up getting one of those 'step-counters' from a certain commercial cereal and I'm sooooo addicted! They may not be accurate but I set a goal for myself and if it means coming home after my walk and dancing like a mad woman until I see those numbers click then so be it.

Hope some of this helps...and again, welcome!!

Cheers

I heard that if you're wanting to lose weight, you need to take 15,000 steps a day...10,000 for normal people....

I think I'll try buying a pedometer and see how I go! Thanks!

Thanks for all your words of welcome!

I'm new to these boards myself. Some things that I have found helpful for me are drinking a lot of water, finding lower calorie/fat alternatives, journaling what I am feeling.

The only thing I drink other than water is lowfat milk or Crystal Lite. If I have an urge for a snack, I try to drink a large glass of cold water and then wait 20 minutes. If I still want the snack after that, then I try to decide what it is I really want.

What I mean for lower calories is having Miracle Whip Free instead of the full blown real thing, I've also been using "I can't beleive it's not butter" spray on toast. Instead of chips, I try to eat fruit or Quakes (the are baked not deep fried).

Hope I've given you some ideas!

What are you studying?

I'm studying Media....I major in TV Production! I love it heaps, which is lucky....do you study?

I've been working on the water thing. I put a couple of drops of cordial in for flavour....I don't mind the cordial weak, but I can only stand so much water!

I have a degree in Statistics, thought about going back for my Masters. I think the biggest reason I haven't pursued it yet is the fact I don't want to be around a large group where there might be SOME shallow people. Notice I said some, I know not all are like that but I had my share of problems in college with kids that hadn't grown up yet.

I love water, so it's not an issue for me.

I also like the posts about a pedometer. I've been doing water aerobics after work but now the pool is closed for 10 LONG days for annual cleaning and painting. UGH! Just when I was getting into the habit of going. I think I will pick up a pedometer this weekend and try walking at least 10,000 steps a day.

The pedometre is a great thing...I know I've already touted it's praise earlier but I can't say enough about it. I didn't know that the average person should have an average of 10,000 steps a day - it makes me feel even better! During the week I walk back and forth to work, take the stairs as much as possible between floors, walk outside at lunch time, etc. so last week alone I clocked in 80,826 steps in 5 days...WAHOOO!!!

The weekends are a bit difficult because I don't walk to work and Sundays are my 'Free' days...however between meeting up with friends and puttering around I do pretty well. And like I said before, dancing like a mad woman for 30 minutes or so can really help those steps add up.

I hope all of you have as much fun with it as I do. Oh and I just ordered a belly dancing dvd...it sounds like it will be a lot of fun...I'll let you know how that goes.

Cheers

Lisa
