Generally between 20-35 grams a day is the current recommednation. But if you know you aren't eating a lot of fiber right now...increase SLOWLY. Like 5 grams every couple weeks. Or else, you'll be spending far more time in the bathroom then you want. ;)
I don't eat a lot of bread...maybe 2 slices of whole wheat bread a day. But I also eat whole wheat tortillas (my favorite!) or wheat pasta and brown or wild rice too....depending on the day. ;) I get most of my fiber probably from fruits and vegetables....I surely get more than my 5 a day (I'm a vegetarian...that helps. ;) ).
Bread tip of the day. :) When you're buying wheat bread, make sure it says "whole wheat". Some so called "wheat" bread is just white bread dyed brown. Not only does white bread low on fiber, it tends to contain quite a bit of trans fatty acids (which is a chemically-made saturated fat).
My...that was a long winded reply to your question.
I've just discovered a bread I absolutely love, Sara Lee 100% Whole Wheat. I made a sandwich for my lunch the other day and it was so soft. I hate dried out bread. In fact we grilled tonite and I had a peice with my dinner and it is still soft.
Other breads I like as well are the Old Village seven grain. It's only one point (WW) for two pieces. Sometimes I will pick up Healthy Choice multigrain or seven grain.
I'm actually considering eating a prune every morning to get more fiber in my diet.
I eat at least one tablespoon of grounded flax seed every day to increase my fiber intake. I usually add it to lowfat yogurt or to yogurt/fruit shakes.
Whole-grain wheat is what I look for and have tried many brands. My mom mentioned the other day to try Milton's brand whole wheat. She says it has a very good flavor. I'll see if Safeway carries it next time I go shopping. Luckily, I don't like white bread. I do however, like all types of rye bread, especially the dark rye! And sourdough... Mmmmm!! Warm and fresh, right off the pier in San Francisco... Sorry, I was daydreaming again.
Typically,25 grams or more of soluable fiber is recommended in a daily diet. This includes fruit, veggies, grains...soluable fiber is the partof the plant tha gets partly digested and is carried in the blood. Insoluble fiberis the celluose partsthat pass thru the system undigested.
I used a12 grain, whole grain or multi grain bread, something brown andheavy with visible grains in it and I look for at leat 2 or three grams of fiber per slice. Pepperidge Farms make some NUMMY higher fiber bread with about 12 net carbs a slice, but it's not really a low carb bread.
What I DID find, is Muellers' brand pasta that has half the carbs, twice as much fiber, and it comes in all sorts of kinds! It tastes the same, but has a chewier texture, like if you cooked it al dente. It does not plump as much as regular pasta, but damn is it good! Now I can relax a little around pasta...Tonight I had a cup and a half of it with Classico Cabernet Marinara sauce, fresh ground Parm and fresh basil. NUMMY!
