The woman appeared on Letterman, and that's what she says she weighs. And Kristie Allie looks every one of those 385 lbs she claims to weigh! I think that pretty much settles it.

God, you must have a really warped sense of people's body weights. I've seen pictures of Kirstie Alley, including her People magazine spread, and she isn't 385 pounds.

More to the point, when was she on Letterman? I can't find any reference to her having appeared on the show recently. Did you get this from the same reliable source that says she's 385 pounds?

I don't really have an opinion about Kirstie Allie because I don't really know much about her, except to say that I'm happy that even overweight people can be famous! I just think it's sad that in today's society, an overweight person is generally not accepted by a lot of people. I hate those ads for weight loss products that show a skinny, perfect looking woman, when in reality, the model probably never had a weight problem in her life!! It's just a flaw in today's society, that unfortunately, a person who does not have a "perfect" body is not as respected as someone who does. It's sad that Kirstie Allie is subject to ridicule just because she gained some weight. It's like people focus on that instead of the fact that she's a good actress. And people embellish her weight...any time that I've seen Kirstie Allie, she has NEVER looked even CLOSE to 300 pounds!! She's just a tall woman with a large frame, who has gained some weight recently, and she's probably in the 200 range. I'm tall myself, at 5'9, and I weigh 204 right now. I carry it well, because I also have a large frame, so if anyone asks how much I weigh and I tell them, they are shocked that I weigh over 200 pounds.

In the end, who cares how much she weighs? She's a actress, why can't people just focus on that instead of the fact that she's gained weight? ~Sabrina

Hi Sabrina,

I haven't been on the board in a few days: too much going on here. But I just saw your post to me, and so I'll take a minute to respond.

You say, of Kristie Allie: "It's sad that Kirstie Allie is subject to ridicule just because she gained some weight." Frankly, I don't think that's IT at all. What's happening is Kristie Allie herself is subjecting herself, and by extension other obese people, to ridicule with that obnoxious (judging from her promos) *reality show* called "Fat Actress" which is scheduled to debute next season. It's not what others are doing to her: it's what she's doing to HERSELF, all to make a buck. And the way she's doing it is extremely negative, for anyone who has ever been overweight.

And now to the weight itself: It's Kristie Allie who, now on several shows to promote her new show, has claimed that her weight is well over 300 lbs. In the past week (say, between last Wednesday and Sunday) she's been on Letterman, ET, and the Ellen Show, and on each one she's made a big deal about how "fat" she is (her words, not mine), and she's claiming to tip the scales in the 380s. Personally, I think she looks every pound of it. I understand that you think she weighs less. But I think we have to take her at her word (and most people probably claim to weigh LESS than they really do). When Kristie Allie says she weighs around 380 lbs, I'll just go ahead and take her at her word on that. (But honestly, I think she probably weighs a tad more at this point).

Kristie Allie was on Cheers, for a time (she replaced the blond bartender character), and at that point she was an ordinary weight. At some point, I do recall, there was a lot of flap because she gained a lot of weight and the producers gave her time off to lose it, or lose the part (her weight no longer fit the character she played). Then basically, I think --but I don't know, because like you I don't pay much attention to what actress is where---well, I think she was pretty much washed up as an actress (did she do any other work??) until she did the Pier One commercials. According to her interview on Letterman (and she repeated this on ET) her stint on the commercials gave her a lot of time at home to "play mommy" (her words) and she said, that for her this meant staying home and making huge, really huge meals, and lots of fattening treats which she ate more than the kids did. And she said, because of all that free time, she "packed on the pounds" (again, her words) until at some point she weighed "abt. 400 lbs" her words again. And these producers, of the new show, approached her and offered her a contract if she'd put on a program in which viewers watched her lose weight (maybe), though....I must say....the promo of that show which depicts Allie stuffing her face (with her hands and a fork) with gobs of spaghetti, and yelling for "more butter" doesn't look like she has any intentions of slimming down anytime soon.

I don't think Kristie Allie can play the victim in this. And of course, that's just my opinion. In fact, I don't think she's trying to say "hey look, what society has done to me." Instead, she seems to be gun-hoe on self destructing before the camera, in some kind of macabre stuffing her face ritual. From what I've heard (from her interviews last week, and from the promo, as well as the various comments coming out of Hollywood about the show) it looks like this is the actress "swan song," and with just about as much class-less-ness as that horrible Anna Nichole show that Fox put on. Neither one would I waste any time watching, as I personally don't gain much pleasure watching women self destruct before the camera.

>>It's sad that Kirstie Allie is subject to ridicule just because she gained some weight. It's like people focus on that instead of the fact that she's a good actress.<<

I don't think she is a good actress. I think she was a one-shot wonder on Cheers, and the producers had a number of very good reasons for not renewing her contract....the out of control weight being only the tip of the ice-berg.

Kerstie,

You're right, it's not a tragedy. Certainly not for Kristie Allie. She parleyed it into a job opportunity after all.

And it's Hollywood, after all. Kirstie Allie has gained and lost, lost and gained, over and over ever since Cheers. Who's to say she didn't just bulk up for a "part," since she hasn't had a job in so long, and her last one was just a series of commercials. It's a way for Kirstie Allie to get on television again, albeit I'm betting the show won't last the whole season. It's her opportunity to hop on the reality show bandwagon.

Kerstin,

Of course, everyone has the power to change. But I think the bone of contention is whether Allie's comments were self-affirming, or just self-serving and a slap in the face for other overweight people. Some posters (myself included) just disagree with you about any "positive message" from Kirstie Allie. You know, that's it. You may see it one way, but others of us see it another. And that's a good thing, after all.

Have a nice day! And continued success reaching your weight loss goals.
