I'm new to the board. Just to let you know I have 100 pounds to loose (I have set this large goal and also have mini goals as well). I am wondering what would be the best excercise to start out with when trying to loose weight, I have started to watch what I eat (I am watching my carbs). I would like to do yoga, and work with the elastic bands. If anyone can help with this question I would appreciate it.
Nick

Congratulations for making the weight loss decision and welcome to the board! Personally, I think the best starting exercise is walking. You can set your own pace and you don't need any equipment, tapes, etc. Just put on your walking shoes and go!! I think stretching is a good starter, as well, again nothing needed but yourself and you can take it slow at first and work your way into more. Just be sure to drink plenty of water whatever you do. Yoga sounds good, too, although I've never tried it.
Talk to you later!

Yoga is great for flexibility and toning, but to lose fat you will have to supplement it with some form of cardio, like walking, bicycling, or an aeorbics tape.
The Walk Away the Pounds tapes are great to start. They are an aerobics series with very simple moves that are different types of walking (side steps, low kicks, etc.) In the summer I just walk 4-5 mles a day outside for my cardio....but 1-2 is great just to start out.
So I say, if you want to try yoga....go for it! It will make you strong and very flexible. Plus, the extra muscle mass will help you burn more calories. But make sure you are also doing an activity that gets your heart pumping at least 3 times a week.
Good luck and welcome!
I'm a walker but I have it easy, I can walk back and forth to work (so that's an hour a day there) plus I take the stairs whenever I can - I got a pedometre a few weeks ago and it's like a drug for me now...very sad.
However, if you find that walking doesn't do it for you than I would go with a dvd or video tape - I just started a bellydancing dvd and am having a ball! You can always rent one from your local video store and see if you like it - if you do, pick it up and work it into your routine.
Oh, and I've also created a little mini gym in my living room (I live alone so it's easy and doesn't get in anyone's way). I bought a good swiss ball to do crunches and numerous other excercise, some hand weights, elastics, and ...just because it's fun...a twist board. This way when I am totally engrossed in Amazing Race instead of just flaking on the sofa and craving food I do a mini workout.
Hope some of these suggestions work for you.
Cheers
Lisa
Well, if you don't enjoy walking or it doesn't work well for you, I would suggest swimming as an alternate activity. It's also low impact and will work all your muscle groups and it's good for your heart, too. I love to swim, and even though I'm extremely self-conscious in a bathing suit, I still go on occasion. Just don't forget the sunscreen!!!
