Amy,

Since you posted the link, I read the OP but not the responses to it. My thoughts. On the one hand, we've already talked about Medicare's decision on this board and you know that I think it's generally a bad idea (for many of the reasons given, not the least of which is obesity is not a disease). Payton asks:

>>Do you think the "fat activists" have a point? The way I read this is, they don't want obesity to be considered a disease, and it should be accepted. They feel if surgery is covered by insurance, it will perpetuate discrimination, prompting more and more people to feel pressured to conform to a certain standard of weight.<<

To answer that: I think "fat activists" have a point, that obesity isn't a disease. But strictly speaking, it's not really the "activists" point, but just common sense. "They feel that if surgery is covered.....discrimination." Well, yes it will do that in all likelihood. But the part about "it should be accepted" is where I strongly disagree. Obesity costs America, and all Americans (whether fat or not) billions of dollars each year, and it results in premature deaths and disease(s). I don't think that we, as a country and a people, should just bury our heads in the sand and say that's "okay." It's not! And that's my humble opinion this morning!

Good morning to you, Amy.
