I went into Subway today to get a salad, and I saw that they had low carb Doritos!! They're called Doritos Edge, and they have 9 g of carbs, minus 3 grams of fiber for a total of 6 net carbs for a 28 gram serving. There aren't many in the bag, but they sure are yummy!! ~Sabrina

Hi Sabrina,

IMO Americans just don't need new Doritos, or **ANY** junk foods. I'm reminded of Jay Leno a few years back making fun of Dominos large pizza deal, whereby for a little extra money they could "make it a meal" by throwing in some breadsticks, chicken wings, and a two liter soda. In an age that SHOULD feature smaller budgets, we are paying Washington chowderheads good money to worry about whether obese people really are more ill and whether they should be helped via government (the Medicare thread, earlier). A local doctor wrote about that, in this morning's paper, concluding "Instead they may threaten the very foundations of our modern 21st century economy if Atkins products stocks start to fall."

IMO the last thing America needs is another Dorito. If Americans would stop buying junk food, eat unprocessed foods and get exercise....that would control the weight problem. I have to agree with the good doctor.

Less Doritos, more good food and good exercise. That would put America, and Americans' growing waists, on the right path, I think.

I agree! Thank goodness for them! A little junk food now and then isn't so bad, especially if it fits in with your WOE! From what I remember, you're doing awesome on you WOE, so this will be perfect for you!

WTG, Doritos!!

Remember those cookies in the green boxes, a few years back? They were low fat, and people thought they could indulge. And people got fatter. I have to agree with Forte: the last thing in the world anyone needs is more junk food. The sandwich and a piece of fruit, perhaps, but add doritos and well, junk food by any other name (low carb or not) is still junk food.

Well, ladies, I see your point, but I have to say that I don't know of many people who are capable of NEVER EVER eating junk food!! What about Christmas time, when everyone around you is eating chocolate and cookies? What about a piece of cake on your birthday? What about PMS? That's a killer for me!! It's good to know that if I am going to indulge, I have the option to make it less detrimental to my body. And the basic rule is to have everything in moderation. That can be really hard sometimes; I'm guilty of eating an entire litre of sugar free ice cream in one night on occasion, but you live and learn! In that case, I learned that the maltitol in the ice cream gave me the runs!! And yet I still made the same mistake a couple more times LOL!! ~Sabrina

Thanks, Dawn! Yeah, it sure makes it easier to stay on track if you've got some legal treats to have now and then! ~Sabrina

I agree with you that all those low fat and fat free products did make people fatter. The reason was people (myself included back then) felt that they could eat as much of it as they wanted because it was "fat free". That same mistake could be made with the low carb products as well. However, if someone is looking for a snack once in a while, I see nothing wrong with indulging in some chips or ice cream that will take care of the craving while not interfering with the person's WOE. Notice I said once in a while, not all the time. Moderation is the key. So enjoy those chips, Sabrina!

Hmmm. Funny, when I use low carb products and eat less carbs, my waistline gets smaller!

Hi Hippolytes,

You said, "I have to agree with Forte: the last thing in the world anyone needs is more junk food." I agree 100%. Some vegetables, or fruit with that sandwich. But the last thing any Americans need at this juncture is one more Dorito. Junk food is not our friend. It's empty calories, and not good for anyone's health, whether on the 100 lbs board or just out there in the general population.

One more way to use that subsidized corn.

I personally try to avoid ever eating junk food. But I think the larger question, posed by the topic, had to do with the new low carb doritos, specifically. And I don't think any good can come from that one.

As to your rule about moderation. That's a basic rule. If I'm going to have any junk food in my life, better to limit it to that one piece of birthday cake (and then make it a healthier one), that scoop of fat free ice cream (which would make it ff milk), and in that case it wouldn't be junk food at all...not the ff ice cream. I don't see anything like that kind of justification for one more dorito on the market, though. There are just better choices to go with a sandwich IMO.

Linda, both you and Hippolytes are right. But the question (if there is one) posed here had to do with the goodness/badness of a specific product, those low carb doritos. And while a piece of birthday cake with ice cream (once a year) is not a figure-breaker, eating processed food in the form of low carb doritos is a zebra of a whole different stripe. It serves no useful, healthy purpose and so should probably be avoided altogether.
