Tina was talking about carbs the other day, the different kinds and what they do to the body. Can someone give us the easy version of what happens with carbs and what kind we are wanting?

Complex carbs - veggies, fruit, anything with fiber - has a longer chain sugar molecule that takes longer to be broken down, and affects the blood sugar more slowly. . Simple sugars, like cany, white bread..has a fast impact on blood sugar and causes it to spike up, and drop fast, resulting in an unsatisfied feeling after a short time. When a carb'sugar molecule is wrapped in fiber, sucha as fruit, it takes longer to digest, therefore you will be satisfied longer.

I'm not quite sure the technical part about them, in the Atkins book at the beginning, he gives a great description of what happens to them regarding how your body burns them and stuff. After having been on Atkins, SBD and now Amy's modified no carb style, I usually get my carbs from veggies (I stay away from carrots, potatoes and corn) and fruit (mostly berries and melons and mango/papaya). Non-fat vanilla yogurt, cottage cheese and stuff is good too. I also try to stay away from any bread that is white (I do whole grains and such). I can't stand any of the low-carb pastas no matter which one so when I do eat pasta, I indulge in the regular stuff but limit my amount. Also, goes without saying on any diet, I stay away from chips, desserts and anything of the like. I do use some of the low-carb products out there but you have to watch the fat/calorie content. So, again, I try to do Amy's low-carb and low fat version. It works for me, when I follow! Oh, and I have replaced sugar with Splenda. It doesn't taste any different to me.

Good Luck!

Sparkles....its hard to do when you dont have a support system. But you have to take a stance whether you have support or not. You have to make sure that you are getting the proper foods for your "diet". So if your living at home, then offer to help your mom with making dinner and make sure you have foods in there that you need. If you live with a mate, then take control of the dinners if you can. Its hard, but you can do it alone...maybe others can give you some advice because Im sure others here have had to go it alone.

But stick around here and hopefully we can fill in the areas that you are lacking :)
