Hurricane Frances

I know that hurricanes have been talked about recently but I thought I would start a post as I didnt realize that Frances was this bad. I called my parents tonight and they filled me in on the details since they get the Florida news. They said that their news is saying that this could possibly be the worst hurricane to hit the States. Its so large that right now, it would span from the Keys to Georgia.

My parents have been staying on Merritt Island to housesit, as you all know. They are leaving in the morning since they are under mandatory evacuation again. They are being told to be out by 2 PM since they are predicting it will hit land where they are staying. They are gonna follow their close friends on the evvacuation, who live on Merritt Island as well. Her husband is bed ridden and doesnt travel well at all. So my parents are gonna follow them as far as they can and then head to Mississippi for my sister's. The cat they are keeping will be joining the neighbors on their evac since they will have to come back to Florida. My parents were leaving in a week anyhow to spend some time with my sister and then come back home (here) for the winter. So they wont be returning and Dad is afraid there wont be much to come back to anyhow. Everyone in the retirement trailer park are definitely leaving this time. The news said that their area is expecting 18 foot surges!

So for those that are in Florida or who have family there...my thoughts are with you. If you have family, please call them to see what their plans are. Im sure this will greatly effect several states, so I will keep you in my thoughts as well. I plan to be watching alot of the weather in the next few days.

LOL That is something parents have to tell their kids and not something you have to typically tell an adult woman.

Pots and pans can't fly as far as I'd like to throw them sometimes, kcwhat.

I don't know why I even tried to help Shawna or her parents, but it won't happen again.

Oh, poor Asstri....

"I don't know why I even tried to help Shawna or her parents, but it won't happen again."

What, with the same brand of help that this was? --

"And Forte, just don't forget--no matter what else--from this point forward, whenever tourists ask for help finding the evacuation route (in case of hurricane) for them ONLY it's take 98 East and South, old scenic 98 whenever possible. Special treatment for our special guests :)"

or this?

"You know, some tourists couldn't find their way out of a paper bag if there was an arrow inside pointed up, the bag was open, and they had a GPS system in there with em."

Uh huh.

LOL You wasnt trying to help us...you were trying to get to me by belittling my parents. So dont try to pull that "Oh pity me" crap NOW. We didnt ask for your help.

Why would we seek the advice from a woman who jokes about giving tourists wrong evacuation route directions anyhow? And from your own mother's mouth <"You can't unsay a cruel thing.">

No, I won't go away. And FYI I live in Florida, but I have the good sense to actually wait and listen to the national weather service. This morning we've had more accidents, deadly ones, caused by hysterical tourists who act impulsively rather than rationally.

And the truth is, Governor Bush issued that order this morning. Good her parents are gone. Finally, out of Florida!!! But, when tourists get scared, and start passing false rumours like "it's the worst hurricane to hit the States ever" or "it's headed straight for Merritt island" when it is not, then these deliberate falsehoods can start or spread hysteria and the absolute wrong time. Those tourists need to get a grip, and ask their local officials.

Hurricane Frances was NEVER reported as the worst storm ever. That's a baldface lie. In fact, Florida and other states have had far worse. It is historic in that seldom do we have 2 strong storms in a row. That's all.

Hurricane Frances is a level 3 hurricane, and for gosh sakes the one two weeks ago was stronger, a level 4. A level 5, hurricane Andrew made landfall at homestead, fl in 1995 and that was one of the worst to hit the US. In 1935 a level 5 hit Miami and that too was one of the worst.

If you are going to live in Florida, or visit Florida between June-Nov, then you better get used to hurricanes. This is a hurricane, a level 3 hurricane, and a level 3 hurricane happens all the time in Florida. They are saying the one out by Africa right now, named Ivan and probably also coming this way, will be much worse.

It goes with the territory of coming to Florida. And anyone who can't understand that, should probably not be here in the first place.

Panic has NO PLACE in a hurricane, and these "oh my poor parents" tales of woe are getting wilder and wilder all the time. If other tourists read it, or if family elsewhere read it, those kinds of lies could create panic. Pfft.

People, hurricane Frances is a very strong hurricane. We have to take it seriously. And when we take these things seriously, we get our information from the national weather service and learn to follow directions from the government. We do not take seriously some wild stories from unreliable sources like these. This is no time for Shawna's foolishness.

Go to your national weather service website, or myflorida.com and learn all about it. Be sensible, take precautions if you live in Florida, and consider (then dismiss) the source of these ridiculous stories.

From a Florida native of 42 years, who has seen a lot of hurricanes, in currently in a wheelchair, and knows enough to stop, look, and listen and follow what the government in Florida advises regarding hurricanes. This is not the time to go off half-cocked and take weather advice from tourists. (And Shawna, next year tell your relatives to visit California! Good Bye!!! May Mississippi tolerate 'em!!!!!!!!!!!!!! )

Hit the road, Jack, ....

A native Floridian, and proud of it

No, I was trying to help because her parents seem so confused. You can't go into an evacuation situation panic-ed, and the truth is, the storm was NEVER headed straight for them. The hurricane is headed no where near Merrit Island, and it never was. Evacuate barrier islands, yes, but when you are told to do so.

And don't scare yourself, or others, by lying about the situation. It's bad enough as it is, with a hurricane of this size coming toward Florida. But it's scheduled to make landfall no where near merritt island, and it's not the worse storm to ever hit the states. No where near that either.

It seems some people just crave attention, but these kinds of lies when a hurricane is coming in can only cause panic. And that's not what anyone in Florida needs. GPS in paper bag syndrome strikes again!
